Aus seiner Feder stammen etliche Romane wie "Helene Laasen", "Maria Himmelfahrt" und "Das Buch vom Jäger Mart", Novellen und Gedichte. Von Hoffensthal beschreibt mit einer poetisch, blumigen Sprache seine Heimat den Ritten, in einer Zeit, in der der technische Fortschritt große Veränderungen mit sich brachte. Die gesellschaftlichen Gegensätze zwischen dem Bauernstand und dem Bürgertum sind ein Hauptthema in seinen Büchern. Sie erreichten hohe Auflagen und von Hoffensthal wurde stellenweise mit Hermann Hesse verglichen. (Zitat Ritten).
