Het geeft inzicht in de geschiedenis en het dagelijkse leven van deze beroepsgroep. Het boek is uitgegeven in 1992 door Krips Repro in Meppel. De turfschipper was een essentieel figuur in het dagelijk…se leven van de Nederlanden, met name in de gebieden waar turf werd gewonnen als brandstof. Turf, een pakketje samengeperst veen, werd eeuwenlang gebruikt als goedkoop en lokaal beschikbaar alternatief voor hout en steenkool. Turfschepen, vaak karakteristiek platbodems, bevoerden de vele grachten en kanalen om deze brandstof te vervoeren naar steden en dorpen. Dit vakmanschap vereiste niet alleen vaardigheid in het navigeren van smalle waterwegen, maar ook kennis van het turftransport en -handel. De turfschipper belichaamt een uniek aspect van de Nederlandse cultuur en economie, waarin waterwegen en het verhandelen van natuurlijke hulpbronnen onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn met het landschap en de geschiedenis.
