Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an exploration of textual corruptions within the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. The author argues that many of the textual errors in these works are not the result of faulty transmission but rather intentional alterations made to conform to moral and aesthetic sensibilities in later periods. Expanding on the work of the great textual critic Richard Porson, the author traces the evolution of textual emendation through the work of numerous scholars, ultimately proposing a new and controversial theory: that many apparent corruptions in the iambic trimeters of Greek tragedy are the result of scribes changing anapaestic feet to iambs. This iconoclastic theory challenges long-held beliefs about the integrity and authenticity of the tragic texts and offers a fresh perspective on the evolution of Greek drama. The author's meticulously researched arguments and provocative insights will be of great interest to scholars and students of classical literature. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
