He offers to 'make amends', if the recipient 'will fix any evening in January'.

Add to basketPrinted in lilac on one side of a 12 x 8,5 cm piece of thin card, with serated edges and rounded corners, and with glue staining to one edge and on blank reverse. The card is embossed with tiny stars, with decorative edges and the text enclosed within an oval border, with the autograph signatures above one another in a rectangul…ar box beneath it. The twelve-line poem (signed in type 'S. C. HALL.') might be viewed as an example of Victorian sentimentality, but one should bear in mind the childless couple and Mrs Hall's failed pregnancies, the fact that her mother lived with them throughout their marriage, and their great benevolence. The poem begins: 'Yes! we go gently down the hill of life, | And thank our God at every step we go: | The husband-lover and the sweetheart-wife. | Of creeping age what do we care or know?' Concludes: 'These fading faculties are sent to say | Heaven is more near to-day than yesterday.' The poem was published in 1878 in the Literary World.

In good condition, on lightly aged paper, with the reverse of the second leaf laid down on part of a leaf from an autograph album, which carries a biographical caption in a contemporary hand. Mrs Carter Hall's connection with the St James's Gazette is unclear, but she has evidently asked Hunt to contribute t…o the magazine. Hunt begins his reply: 'Dear Mrs Hall | there is no scarcity of subjects - my difficulty is to select the subject which I can deal with in a satisfactory manner & which shall be, at once, instructive & entertaining.' He proceeds to give a short summary of how he would treat two subjects 'upon which I could write fairly well', 'The Balance of Nature' and 'Light and Life'. After the second he writes: 'A third subject strikes me. Just now the Scientific World are excited by the Discoveries made by Kirkhoff & Bunsen as to the Composition of the Sun. I could give you a readable paper containing all the new facts - which we might call | The Composition of the Sun | or | The Sun and the Earth'. He concludes by stating that he is 'really desirous of aiding you - to the best of my powers. I regard the St James's with feelings of affection - I find it everywhere'.

It has all the sharpness of the original bloc…k, & though about double the expense of a Stereotype in the first instance, it will last out a dozen such & look infinitely better all through; indeed it will probably wear longer than the wood itself.' He continues: 'The wood cut I have kept for the Art Union, & only await the article you promised, to put it into Mr. Halls [S. C. Hall, editor of the Art Union Monthly] hands; this shod. be done as soon as you conveniently can, to meet his arrangements'. There follows a reference to 'Mr. Fairholt', who has shown Mason 'the sketches he made for your label'.'The letter continues: 'Although your mind has been unsettled as to the mode you will finally adopt for the engraving, I am satisfied, (selfishness & vexation apart) that wood would be the right way; printing it with a ground tint, as Mr. Clements suggested; this will give it not only a rich but very finished appearance & in the long run, where great numbers might be wanted, become by far the least expensive'. He suggests binding up the item 'with one of the Art Union Monthly Parts' ('this would give it a wide circulation, but how far it would be the kind of advertisement for you, would be for your consideration'), and after a few more comments concludes. At foot of last page: 'Acct. for Printing 2 . 0 . 0 | Electrotype of trowel 0 . 12 . 0 | [total] 2 . 12 . 0'.

Add to basketSee Parris's entry in the Oxford DNB. The subject of the letter is his work 'restoring' James Thornhill's paintings inside the dome of St Paul's Cathedral. Beginning in 1853 and ending three years later, Parris worked on scaffolding he had designed for the purpose thirty years before. His efforts were not well received: he was a…ccused of completely repainting Thornhill's work, to its detriment. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged and creased, with minor traces of mount adhering to the blank reverse. Folded twice. Having received the recipient's 'favor', he begins by sending his 'regards to Mr and Mrs Hall', i.e. Samuel Carter Hall (1800-1889), editor of the of the Art Journal and New Monthly Magazine, and his wife Anna Maria Hall (1800-1881). From the context of the letter it would appear that Duffane has requested information for an article for one of the two magazines of which Hall is editor. He is sending 'a very rough & hastily scrawl'd account of my apparatus &c at St Pauls, which You may perhaps distil something from'. He points out that the account he is sending 'is quite different from what has recently appear'd in the Times &c'. He feels that 'the shortest notice will be most advisable', but asks him to 'make what You please out of it'. The letter ends: 'I am at the Cathedral every day and shall be glad to shew You all particulars if you will enquire for me any time you are passing'.

She lived in Saint George Hanover Square District, Middlesex, England in 1881. She died on 24 August 1970, in Kincardine O'Neil, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, at the age of 92, and was buried in Kincardine O'Neil, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. As a result of discussions held at the time of this circular the money from the Fund was used to set up the first nursing school, the Nightingale T…raining School, at St Thomas's Hospital in 1860. ONE: Printed circular in form of a facsimile ALS from 'S. C. Hall / Hon. Sec.' 1p, 8vo. On first leaf of a bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Twenty-four lines of text. The only genuine piece of Hall's autograph is the address to 'Col Jeb / &c &c'. Begins: 'It is considered desirable that the Nightingale Fund should not be dissolved without conveying to M. and Madame Goldschmidt some mark of respect - in acknowledgement of their munificent contribution to that Fund.' The contribution is stated to total £2422. It is proposed to present the Goldschmidts with 'a marble bust of Her Majesty the Queen, to be executed by Mr Joseph Durham'. TWO: Manuscript letter. 1p, 12mo. In fair condition, with closed tear to fore-edge. Sent from the town house of the Fund's chairman Lord Herbert of Lea.
