Shows some wear but overall a nice representation. From Dr. Hall's obituary: "Dr. Hall retired in 1987 as Regents' Professor Emeritus of Engineering Technology at Savannah State University. During his tenure he served as Department head of Industrial Technology, Vice President, and Acting President of Savannah State. Under his leadership Savannah State became the first B.S. degree engineering technology program in the southeast and the first accreditation program in the state. During his presidency from 1978 to 1980, he provided stable leadership during the desegregation debate and improved the academic climates as well as the physical environment of the institution. He was a highly impactful speaker as he advocated for equitable education and the end of segregation during the civil rights movement. Dr. Hall authored "One Hundred Year of Education at Savannah State College 1890-1990" preserving the history of his beloved institution. He established the Dr. Clyde Hall Endowed Scholarship for engineering technology students at Savannah State University. Dr. Hall's educational career included a B.S. degree from Georgia State College '48 (Savannah State University), masters degree from Iowa State University' 49 and Ph.D. from Bradley University '53. Dr. Hall's professional career prior to Savannah State included chief program officer at Booker Washington Institute Kakata, Liberia West Africa." "Since coverage of the history of industrial training of blacks in the United States is lacking, the author has compiled a single volume tracing this history from the plantation era. All phases are described--early schools prior to 1865, private and public industrial institutions of higher education, private institutions of higher education offering industrial courses, private industrial secondary schools, and public secondary schools with industrial programs. Between 1830-60, manual labor schools were established in the North, schools isolated without a market for products. After the Civil War, the North favored classical education for blacks versus industrial training by the South. Between 1880 and 1890, Booker T. Washington advocated mostly vocational industrial education in trades. The Second Morrill Act of 1890 gave new life to land-grant college education for blacks. About 1900 secondary industrial schools were founded similar to the Hampton and Tuskegee Institutes. Passage of the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917 began a new era of industrial training for public secondary schools. However, prior to 1954 numerous inequities existed; courses for blacks often were limited to janitorial services, tailoring/upholstering, and woodworking. During the 1930s, institutions of higher learning began evalating their industrial programs and creating industrial teacher program." A ONE OF A KIND Addition To Your Collection! Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This book describes the development of Savannah State College during its first one hundred years of existence. This institution came into being as the first State-supported college in Georgia for Blacks because of the 1890 Land-Grant Act of the United States Government which mandated the State to create a college for Blacks if it wanted to continue receiving federal funds for White students enrolled in the agricultural & mechanic arts programs at the University of Georgia. This publication is subdivided by the administrations of the College's nine permanent & three acting presidents. A section covers the relationship between Atlanta University & the State of Georgia to fulfill the requirements of the 1862 Land-Grant Act before the founding of Savannah State College.
