Nachdem sie ihren kleinen Bruder aus unmöglichen Verhältnissen gerettet hatte, gelangte sie noch vor Beginn der Vertreibung in die russische Besatzungszone und, da die Berliner Wohnung zerstört war, in ein Dorf bei Greifswald zu ihrer Mutter und Verwandten. Sie knüpfte bald illegal Beziehungen in die amerikanische Zone an, wo sie schließlich blieb, heiratete und eine Familie gründete. Ende der 50er Jahre konnte diese nach Kalifornien auswandern. Dort mußte sie nach sehr guten Anfängen einen allmählichen finanziellen Niedergang der Familie erleben, den sie auch durch eigene Berufstätigkeit nicht aufhalten konnte. Ihrem autoritären Ehemann versuchte sie so lange wie irgend möglich die Stange zu halten, doch schließlich rang sie sich - nach einem ersten vergeblichen Anlauf - zur Scheidung durch.
