The European settlement of the Wellsford area (Lower Northland) effectively began in 1862 with the arrival of the first Albertlanders, a group of "non-conformists" gathered from many parts of the British Isles under the NZ Special Settlements scheme. Already, however, a number of settlers had become established in the area. The Albertlanders were to occupy land they were to be granted ownership of after four years of occupation. The first ship carrying the new settlers arrived in NZ in early September 1862 followed by another in mid-September and one in mid-November, three more came in 1863, one each in 1864 and '65. while many other Albertlanders travelled out independently. In all about 3000 Albertlanders migrated to NZ, but not all settled in the Lower North. Important as this Special Settlement group was to NZ's immigration policies, all was not smooth sailing on arrival for these pioneer folk, who had many obstacles to surmount to achieve sucess and stability in their new homeland. This history encompasses all the factors that applied to the earliy settlers and tracks the economic and social development of the district through the peaks and troughs of the first 100 years. One of the essentials of a local history --- identifying those who played a significent part in the establishmen of any district --- has received exceptiional study in this history with no notable event or personality apparently overlooked. Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. 1st. From the earliest days of NZ's European settlement the Northland area depended on coastal shipping for passenger and cargo carriage. This created a situation where areas distant from the coast experienced an extremely slow rate of growth and development. As a consequence demands for improved land transport provision quckly developed, but were slowly answered. Although the Northland area was the first settled by Europeans its importance quickly waned as Auckland grew. rapidly after it was selected as the seat of the colonial administration in 1840. To the South of Auckland the Great South Road was constructed by the military during the land wars of the Waikato region in the 1860s. Although such a Northern counterpart was first noted earlier, it was probably 1877 before construction of this "highway" to "open up the North" was actually underway. Mabbett has skillfully followed the progrees on the road north, which was as complex as the terrain on the route it followed. He covers its progression in 14 territorial chapters, beginning in the northern suburbs of Auckland city to Whangarei, where his account of the Great North Road project ends. While the Road construction forms the central "plot " to his narrative Mabbett has, in each chapter, recalled the early settlers from each section with anecdotes, tales of the obstracles encounted and ovecome, of the local influences on the route the road took. Also examined are the political and economic conditions prevailing over the project as a whole. Seldom does a book focus on a single road, but "The Great Road North" is a fine example of how this can be done successfully by injecting local history into the story, while emphasising the engineering aspects but tempering these with recollections from the workers, the pioneer settlers and advocates for the Great North Road. . A subsidiary chapter covers the development of coach lines (or the lack thereof) through the era of the Road's development. The original Road, and its side-roads, road were primative, dusty in summer and trecherously muddy in winter, but it marked the beginning of inproved roading in the North and required constant improvement and re-constructuion, which continues today, while remote areas of Northland are often neglected where adequate roading is concerned.
