This is the war-time story of a young soldier who, sick of war, deserts his regiment and is befriended, loved and hidden by a woman farmer whose husband is a prisoner of the Japanese. In the lonely farmhouse set high in secluded hills the two lovers adopt every kind of subterfuge to escape discovery by the military police until the situation reaches its tragic breaking point.
Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Ron Clarke (illustrator). 1st. Set in a remote area of Southern England during WWII this H E Bates novella deals with a war-time romance with a difference --- a military deserter is shelterted on a farm from the authorities by a woman whose soldier husband is a POW of the Japanese. All the literary skills of H E Bates are perfected in the settings, personalities, reactions, tensions and the relationship of the two main characters and their schemes to conceal the deserter from the military police. The author brings the book to its inevitable, surprise, conclusion with the same deftness that characterises the book. His story was initially published as a three-part series in the Daily Telegraph, marking a first for that newspaper. At the time of publication in novella form a film based on it was planned. First edition of 1970, 80 pages, numerous b/w sketches by Ron Clarke. Cream hard covers are VG+ with blue/gray vertical wave pattern to both boards with gilt spine titles on a brown panel, dark gray e/papers and text block excellent, with few small and isolated foxing spots, no inscriptions.
