All the literary skills of H E Bates are perfected in the settings, personalities, reactions, tensions and the relationship of the two main characters and their schemes to conceal the deserter from the military police. The author brings the book to its inevitable, surprise, conclusion with the same deftness that characterises the book. His story was initially published as a three-part series in the Daily Telegraph, marking a first for that newspaper. At the time of publication in novella form a film based on it was planned.
