This issue is especially notable for printing a 16-page "condensation" from Anny Petry's recently-published book *The Street*, as well as the monthly column "If I Were a Negro," this month penned by Wallace Stegner and titled "The Common Cause of Color." Also prints Fiorello LaGuardia's "The Battle of Bigotry Begins at Home" (condensed from an advertisement by Sachs Quality Stores); E. B. White's "Color Added" (condensed from the book *One Man's Meat*); and "Where Are Your Tears, Christians" by Jesuit priest Rev. George H. Dunne (condensed from *Commonweal*). Ann Petry's *The Street* would become the first novel by an African-American woman to sell over a million copies. An important magazine; early issues are uncommon.

Neben den geliiufigen, auch in vegetativen Zellen v…orkommenden Organellen, finden sich speziell auf die Besonderheiten der Keimzelle abgestimmte Einschlusse. Form und Anordnung der Zellorganellen werden im Ablauf der Eireifung und fruhen Keimentwicklung stiindig veriindert. Da die Funktion der Zellorgane an bestimmte Muster und Kombinationen ge bunden ist, sind aus der Ordnung der Zellstrukturen Riickschliisse auf ihre Bedeutung fUr die Keimentwicklung moglich. Experimentelle Untersuchungen zeigen, daB die Bildung einer Embryonalanlage an bestimmte 'Faktorenbereiche' der Eizelle gebunden ist (SEIDEL, 1952a und b, 1956, 1960). Wieweit spezifisch histochemisch reagierende Areale (Verteilung der metachromotropen Substanz: DALCQ, 1951, 1952; JONES-SEATON, 1950; DE GEETER, 1954) diesen Faktoren bereichen entsprechen, ist mit lichtmikroskopischen Methoden nicht zu kliiren. Nach orientierenden Untersuchungen zur Analyse der Feinstruktur und zur Er fassung des Organellenbestandes der Siiugereizelle sind phasengerechte elektronen mikroskopische Studien der Oogenese, Fertilisation und Blastogenese von aktuellem Interesse. Diese Untersuchungen geben unter anderem tiefere Ein blicke in den formalen Ablauf der speziellen Teilungsvorgiinge, in die Natur der zelleigenen Reservestoffe und die cytologischen Korrelate der Informations speicherung fiir die Keimentwicklung. Vergleichende elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen an tierischen Objekten haben in den letzten Jahren unabhiingig von der speciesbedingten Variabilitiit viele morphogenetische Probleme dem Verstiindnis niiher gebracht. NaturgemiiB stiitzen sich unsere Kenntnisse vor wiegend auf Befunde an Laboratoriumstieren, bei denen eine phasengerechte Studie am ehesten moglich ist.
