Vellum darkened and lightly stained, spine with creases and small wormholes; interior toned with scattered foxing. Two leaves in the Lexicon with small rectangular cut-outs, not affecting the printed text, as visible in the supplied photographs; engraved title well struck. Binding sound and unsophisticated. Gutbier's Novum Testamentum Syriace (1664) is among the earliest printed editions of the Syriac New Testament, issued from Hamburg with privilege. Based on codex Ambrosianus and other manuscripts, it reflects the 17th-century effort to recover the Peshitta as a witness to biblical text. The accompanying Lexicon Syriacum appears here in the 1706 Nürnberg edition prepared by Johann Michael Gutbier, expanded and corrected from earlier versions, with spicilegium, critical notes, and catalogues. The binding unites these two landmark works of Syriac philology, offering both text and tools for interpretation. Rare in contemporary vellum, copies combining both the New Testament and the Lexicon are especially prized in the history of biblical scholarship and Syriac studies.
