Docteur en médecine de l'Université de Montpellier,… né à Salles dans les Cévennes, Pierre Guisard, de famille protestante, fut élevé dans le collège des Jésuites. Il perfectionna son art à Lyon, et en 1731 se distingua au concours de deux chaires vacantes par l'abdication de Deidier et Astruc. Il séjourna un an à Paris (1741) puis revint à Montpellier, dans l'espoir de faire ériger une chaire de physique expérimentale. Il mourut en 1746. L'édition originale du présent ouvrage (qui le complète considérablement) fut publiée en 1741 en Avignon sous un titre différent : "Essai sur les maladies vénériennes".
