A lengthy text, it includes a wide variety of attributed recipes, including stewed pigeons, native wild ducks, Curry Hawaiian, Olympia Oysters and Fresh Mushrooms, papas rellenas, and pilaf, plus at least 11 recipes for alcoholic drinks, such as Ne Plus Ultra Punch and Christmas Punch. Entire chapters are devoted to "Ice Cream and Ices", "Household Economy," and "The Sick Room." Recipes are interspersed with menus, as well as essays like "How to Keep House Successfully With One Servant" and "Suggestions for a Christmas Dinner" that provide a window into the domestic life of the period. Ten in OCLC. This copy with the ownership inscription of Mrs. J.B. Macdougall, wife of a prominent Seattle gold rush era merchant who founded MacDougall and Southwick, which became a popular department store.
