Sein eigenes Fahrzeug war nicht mehr zu gebrauchen, ein weiteres war beschädigt. Zwei Mitglieder seiner kleinen Einheit hatten ernsthafte gesundheitliche Probleme und alle anderen waren total erschöpft. Aus dieser Situation hatte László Almásy die ganze Planung überarbeitet und noch in der Nacht eine neue Route berechnet. Am Morgen schickte er die beiden Kranken mit dem beschädigten Fahrzeug zurück nach Gialo. Die anderen brachen unter seiner Leitung erneut auf. Das Wasser und der Treibstoff konnten vielleicht ausreichen, um das Ziel zu erreichen, aber es war nicht genug da, um auch wieder zurückzukommen. Und dann waren da auch noch die feindlichen Wüstenpatrouillen.30. Dezember 2008. Nach einiger Korrespondenz entschieden sich die drei Autoren, die längst überfällige Geschichte der 'Operation Salam' niederzuschreiben und Almasy und seinen Leistungen das wohlverdiente Denkmal zu setzen. Mit Hilfe von Tagebüchern, Dokumenten aus Archiven, historischen Fotos, langwierigen Nachforschungen sowie den eigenen Erfahrungen im Bereisen der Wüste gelang es den Autoren die Vielzahl an Mythen, Legenden und schlichtweg unwahren Behauptungen auszuräumen und nicht nur die komplette, sondern auch die korrekte Version von Almásys Aktivitäten zu erarbeiten. Dies ist die Geschichte einer der wagemutigsten und herausragendsten Operationen des Wüstenfeldzuges des Zweiten Weltkrieges, einer Mission weit hinter den feindlichen Linien über Tausende von Kilometern durch die Wüste Libyens und Ägyptens in der trockensten Zone der Sahara. Das Oberkommando glaubte nie an den Erfolg - aber es rechnete nicht mit Almásys Erfahrung und Ausdauer. Das Buch liefert die Details dieser Operation. Es berücksichtigt alle bisherigen Publikationen, vor allem aber auch die Protokolle der Befragung der gefassten Agenten und der abgefangenen Funkmeldungen. Gassler war zu Lebzeiten öffentlich auch nie so präsent, wie es Bider, Audemars, Comte und andere Schweizer Piloten der Pionierzeit waren, so dass in den Schweizer Zeitungen nicht einmal über ihn berichtet wurde. Trotzdem, die Angaben, die sich zu Gasslers Leben erhalten haben, geben Einblick in seine Tätigkeiten und eine Zeit rasanter technischer Entwicklungen und politischer Umwälzungen. Oktober 1944 drang ein amerikanisches Verbindungsflugzeug vom Typ Stinson L-5 Sentinel in der Region Pruntrut in den Schweizer Luftraum ein und wurde von der Fliegerabwehr beschossen. Der Pilot entschloss sich aufgrund der danach beschädigten Benzinleitung zu einer Notlandung auf einer kleinen Wiese.Während der Pilot und sein Passagier in der Folge interniert wurden, hat man das Flugzeug nach Dübendorf transportiert, dort repariert und danach bei der Schweizer Flugwaffe eingesetzt, bis es nach dem Kriegsende an die Amerikaner zurückgegeben werden musste.Die Geschichte dieses Flugzeug endet aber nicht mit der Rückgabe an die Amerikaner sondern sie dauert bis heute an. The original of the first part was lost or destroyed when he was taken prisoner by the Germans in December 1941. He re-wrote it from memory as a POW in Italy and continued with the events after his capture in parts two and three.It is not the aim of this little book, to find the answers to all the questions which the reader may discover 'between the lines', but rather to give some insight into a seldom told story. It was not. but instead, we found that it was a mission of the Sudan Defence Force and an Indian Long Range Patrol. Should we now ommit the article, we asked ourselves. but soon came to the conclusion that we should include it. TRACKS 2025 is also the first issue where we include an article about an enemy unit, the German Wüstennotstaffel, explaining briefly the units background but focus on its encounters with the LRDG.We will continue to include articles about enemy units and other Allied special forces in TRACKS, always in close connection to the LRDG and its missions. To navigate during his 1929 expedition into the desert of Egypt, Bagnold used a magnetic aero-compass, which was lent to him by the Royal Geographical Society. It was carefully mounted on one of the expedition's Ford-cars but Bagnold could not manage to compensate it properly due to the influence of magnetism caused by the metal structure of the car. Bagnold found that kind of compass unreliable for the purpose and changed to the use of sun-compasses for his next expedition to the sand-sea in 1930.Bagnold's invention was different from all other sun-compasses since it could be used whilst the vehicle was driving. However, although it was an easy to handle and very useful instrument, the British army never adopted it but kept using the other models. When Bagnold founded the Long Range Desert Group in 1940, his sun-compass became the standard instrument for this unit. Its navigators soon became the unrivaled masters of desert navigation. …

The original of the first part was lost or destroyed when he was taken prisoner by the Germans in December 1941. He re-wrote it from memory as a POW in Italy and continued with the events after his capture in parts two and three.It is not the aim of this little book, to find the answers to all the questions which the reader may discover 'between the lines', but rather to give some insight into a seldom told story.
