Contact seller5-star sellerDiseases of the Skin: A Manual for Students and Practitioners is a compact dermatology manual by Dr. Joseph Grindon, Professor of Clinical Dermatology and Syphilis at Washington University in St. Louis, published as part of Lea's Series of Pocket Text-Books, a well-known American series designed to give students and general prac…titioners portable, practical clinical references. The manual is illustrated with thirty-nine engravings and opens with a striking hand-colored frontispiece plate depicting the "Premycosic Stage of Mycosis Fungoides," offering readers an immediate visual anchor for one of the more serious and visually distinctive conditions covered in the text before proceeding into the systematic treatment of skin disease diagnosis and management. What sets this particular copy apart, however, is a genuinely remarkable inclusion: bound into the front of the book is an original autograph letter, signed, from author Dr. Joseph Grindon himself, dated March 27, 1903, and written on his personal St. Louis letterhead. The letter is addressed to "Dr. Alfred Robbins" of Washington, D.C. and discusses a specific referred patient case - a Mr. H. F. Napper (or similarly spelled), who presented with progenital herpes he feared might be luetic (syphilitic), which Grindon assured him was not the case after reviewing his history. This is a genuine piece of physician-to-physician correspondence from the book's own author, tied directly to the original owner, Dr. Henry Alfred Robbins, whose ownership signature appears on the title page - making this a true association copy with primary-source documentary value well beyond the text itself. Condition & Binding: This is a hardcover volume bound in red cloth, part of the uniform Lea's Pocket Text-Books series design, with elaborate gilt decorative panels and rules stamped on the spine reading "DISEASES OF THE SKIN / GRINDON - GALLAUDET / SERIES OF POCKET TEXT BOOKS," and matching gilt corner ornaments. The spine gilt remains bright and highly legible. The covers show light overall wear with some scattered surface soiling/staining to the front board, and light rubbing to the corners and spine ends. The text block is tight and complete, with the frontispiece plate retaining good color, and the bound-in autograph letter (four handwritten pages on lined stationery) showing some expected toning, a small area of loss/chipping to the top edge of the first letter leaf, and light soiling, but remaining fully legible throughout, the title page is detached but present. The book also carries the ownership signature "Henry Alfred Robbins M.D." on the title page, an ink practice/office stamp reading "Dr. Henry A. Robbins. Washington, D.C." and a separate stamp for "Dr. Arthur J. Hall, 625 I St. N.W., Washington, D.C." indicating further physician ownership. A later institutional bookplate for the "Library of the Supreme Council, 33°, A.A.S.R., Southern Jurisdiction, U.S.A., Washington, D.C." (the Scottish Rite Masonic library) appears on the front pastedown with a class number and pencil price notation, indicating the book eventually passed into that institutional collection. Overall- very good.
