Condition: Sehr gut. 247 S. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Chinese furniture in the collection ofThe Minneapolis Institute of Arts is remarkable for the extraordinary examples of forms represented and also for the unique architectural installation. The Chinese galleries include a large Ming-dynasty ceremonial hall taken from the Wu Family house and an extremely well-preserved library that dates to 1797, the middle of the Qing dynasty. The two structures show the different stylistic approaches represented by the Ming and Qing dynasties and the interdependence of Chinese furniture and architecture. Chinese furniture has its roots in architecture. A Ming- or Qing-dynasty cabinetmaker used essentially the same techniques and tools as a carpenter from the same period. Although carpentry and cabinetmaking have always been allied fields, we know very little about the early origins of Chinese furniture. Written records are difficult to interpret, and almost no full-scale examples have survived that antedate the Ming dynasty.Excavated tombs with fresco paintings record some types of furniture, but these were, like those in later paintings, not necessarily intended as exact representations.
