Sachsen zählte im Barock zu den ökonomisch und kulturell führenden europäischen Ländern. Die Leistungen in Architektur, Kunsthandwerk, Malerei, in Wissenschaft und Manufakturwesen waren stilprägend und galten als vorbildhaft mindestens an den deutschen Fürstenhöfen. Verwurzelt in höfischer Musikkultur und protestantischen Traditionen entfaltete sich auch eine vielfältige, landesweite Musikpflege, deren Gipfelpunkt, das Werk von Johann Sebastian Bach, ein Markstein des Weltmusikerbes wurde. Mit Gottfried Silbermann erreichte schließlich auch der sächsische Instrumentenbau eine sprichwörtliche Verfeinerung der Musikalität.
