Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 4to. Stab-stapled. 68pp. + 2pp. illustrations. Cover by Jean Cocteau, its layout by Richard D. Tuttle. A superb double issue devoted to the experimental filmmaker Markopoulos, signed and numbered by him (no. 252 of an unspecified total), including contributions by Stan Brakhage, G…erard Malanga, Charles Boultenhouse, Gregory Battcock, Parker Tyler, Donald Weinstein, George Landow, Jan Wahl, Mary Batten, Harry Feldman, Elwood Decker, Curtis Harrington, Kaaren Klingel, Sitney, and Markopoulos himself. At the time he was trying to secure the print of his film 'Serenity' from errant producers, and 'Twice a Man' was soon to be released. The usual toning to the stock and, in part, to the front cover, which is a little rubbed with a couple of minor nicks, but Very Good all things considered. Signed by Author(s).

Add to basketSoftcover. Condition: Gut bis sehr gut. Limitierte Ausgabe. B : 4to. (Quartformat), 70 unpaginierte Seiten, durchgehend illustriert - In 1973, the American artist Paul Thek (1933 1988) realized, along with his friends, the Artist s Coop, the environment Ark, Pyramid, Easter A Visiting Group Show at the Museum of Art Lucerne. The… exhibition was the fourth in a series of what are today seen as the most significant atmospheric large-scale projects of the 1970s using individualized religious symbols. These installations, now lost, are also among the central works of the legendary artist. The goal of Paul Thek, in Process is to memorialize Thek s spatial work of that time and to locate it within a larger historical context. As exhibition, documentation and inscenation the series of exhibitions also investigate the status of ephemeral materials in exhibitions, the boundaries of the artwork, institutional history, reception, and today s practice of re-inscenation integrating ideas of an archaeological research and a transparent, revealing art mediation. As a result, the project follows Paul Thek s travels across Europe and is and will be shown in different forms at the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, at the Museum of Art Lucerne and at the Moderna Museet Stockholm. - In comparison with the stages of the exhibition in Duisburg and Stockholm, in Lucerne Thek s idea of collaborative working practice plays a particularly important part. In 1973 the artist officially abandoned individual authorship for the first time and made the collective working method the subject of the exhibition itself. Consequently, in Paul Thek, in Process (Lucerne), some of the artists who worked in the Artist s Coop will be introduced, such as Franz Deckwitz, Edwin Klein, Cindy Lubar, Peter Hujar, Ann Wilson and Robert Wilson.

These are in a box with a small tear at the fore-edge. Otherwise only minor marks. Included, loosely inserted, is an essay by Markopoulos on Beavers work,"Art Is Not Knowledge", in a limited ed. o…f 100 copies. It is presented by its author to Lady Casson, on 4th Jan 1975. The covers of 'Art is Not Knowledge' are clean and white, fine. These items would seem to have been produced at different times but may well have been presented to friends together with the original publication of the Film Notes and Plates for Still Light, as I have seen the essay with another copy. Acquired from Maude Lloyd, an admired leading dancer with Ballet Rambert in the 1930s. With her husband, Nigel Gosling a renowned art critic, she later wrote, influential dance books and reviews under the joint pseudonym, 'Alexander Bland'. When Rudolph Nureyev defected in 1961, Margot Fonteyn asked them to befriend him which they gladly did offering him freedom of their house. Gosling edited his autobiography. Nureyev wrote an admiring memoir of him in Observer of the Dance anthologising Goslings reviews, "He and Maude were like my family.". Signed by Author(s).
