Montano's work includes secular and religious poetry, as well as a previously unpublished scenic fable,… or short play. The author, a contemporary of Torquato Tasso, was a man of the Church who nonetheless possessed a deep understanding of the secular and romantic traditions of his time, and his work is a valuable insight into the late Renaissance psyche. His work demonstrates the full range of the literary and poetic techniques in vogue at the time, and even pushes the form forward in places, particularly with regard to the use of iambic verse. His religious poetry demonstrates a deep piety that is nonetheless unencumbered by the occasional cynicism of some of his contemporaries, while his love poetry is warm and passionate, without succumbing to the excesses of Petrarchan mannerism. Montano's work is distinguished by its sincerity and depth of feeling, which makes it as relevant, accessible, and enjoyable today as it was in his own time.
