Hardcover. Condition: Good. Beautifully illustrated, vintage copy of "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" by Thomas Gray. 1931; The Medici Society; London. The book features a color frontispiece portrait of Gray, numerous full-page drawings (some of which are in color), and vignettes by Frank Adams. Gilt top page edges. The book is a famous 18th-century poem that reflects upon the inevitability of death, the contrast between the rich and the poor, and the desire for one's life to be remembered. Standing in a quiet rural graveyard at twilight, the speaker reflects on the lives of the ordinary, poor villagers buried there. Rather than mourning a famous historical figure, the poem uniquely commemorates the common, forgotten people of the world. Condition: Light soiling to the covers and spine. There are a couple small stains at the bottom half of the spine. Light foxing along the bottom edge of the front cover. Tiny cloth tears at 3 of the cover corner tips. There is a marginal crack at the front hinge between the end papers - despite the crack, the front cover is still firmly attached and is not shaky. The back cover is firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only an occasional small, light smudges found here and there. Previous owner's bookplate affixed to the front pastedown.
