On the front endpaper is a "Special Autographed Copy" bookplate. It is inscribed: "To George Gray. a fellow artist with many thanks for our association with the Coast Guard." [In the early 1980s George Gray founded The Coast Guard Art Program (CoGAP). He served as CoGAP's chairman for more than twenty years. Active as a muralist and illustrator for seven decades, Gray specialized in historical and military themes. The George Gray Award for Artistic Excellence was named in his honor. Among the books he illustrated are: SINBAD OF THE COAST GUARD; AMERICAN INDIAN; MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA ROUNDABOUT; ICELAND ROUNDABOUT; and SCANDINAVIAN ROUNDABOUT]. From the Dust Jacket: "The reminiscences and anecdotes in CLOSE TO GLORY were contributed by the writers, artists, and photographers who served on YANK magazine in WWII. They also came from original correspondence exchanged between the editor, Joe McCarthy, and overseas press correspondents during the war. [The book provides] accurate first-person accounts of men reporting a war under intense pressures, releasing their emotions in humor and in some cases recording their abhorrence of war." .
