Condition: New. Reprint by Naval & Military Press (first pub 1936). SB. 334pp with 9 b/w illus and numerous maps, plans and diagrams.Published Price £15.50 Undoubtedly the best and most comprehensive account of the war underground, a history of the Tunnelling Companies, RE, during the Great War. In all twenty-five British, thre…e Australian, three Canadian and one N Zealand company were formed. After a shaky start in December 1914 the miners of the BEF gradually overcame their opposite numbers in the grim warfare under the trenches, and had finally defeated them by the time of Messines in June 1917. But, as the narrative shows, the war for the miners did not end there as they fought through the German Spring 1918 offensive and the BEF's Advance to Victory. Demolitions, booby traps, neutralising anti-tank mines, even fighting as infantry (No 1 and No 2 RE Battalions) were among the tasks and roles allotted to them.

In simple but vivid detail, Velma Wallis depicts a landscape and way of life that are at once merciless and starkly beautiful. In her old women, she has created two heroines of steely determination whose story of betrayal, friendship, community and forgiveness "speaks straight to the heart with clarity, sweetness and wisdom" (Ursula K. Le Guin). ; Velma Wallis is one in a family of thirteen children, all born in the vast fur-trapping country of Fort Yukon, Alaska, and raised with traditional Athabascan values. A writer and avid reader, she lives in Fairbanks. ; tear on back of dustjacket ; FINE/G. Book.
