In der Erdgeschichte hat es allerdings eine Vielzahl solcher großer Schwankungen gegeben. Zur Betrachtung ist der Maßstab wichtig. Es gibt einen Wechsel zwischen Eiszeitaltern und Warmzeitaltern in sehr kleinem Maßstab. Als Eiszeitalter werden Zeitabschnitte bezeichnet, in denen beide Pole vereist sind. Momentan befinden wir uns also in einem Eiszeitalter und das bereits seit etwas mehr als 2,5 Millionen Jahren. Wenn wir den Maßstab größer wählen, so können wir in unserem aktuellen Eiszeitalter Eiszeiten (Glaziale) und Warmzeiten (Interglaziale) ausmachen. Die letzten beiden großen Warm- und Eiszeiten sind die Eem-Warmzeit und die Würm-Eiszeit. Im Moment befinden wir uns in der Neo-Warmzeit, die das Holozän markiert. Bei noch größerem Maßstab werden weitere Schwankungen in diesen Warm- und Eiszeitaltern sichtbar, man spricht hierbei schließlich von Stadialen und Interstadialen. Die Ursachen der zu Grunde liegenden Klimaschwankungen sind komplex und nicht einfach benennbar. Es gibt nie nur eine einzelne Ursache, sondern es liegt ein Zusammenspiel von etlichen Faktoren vor. Die Faktoren können in innere (auf der Erde auftretende) und äußere (von außen auf die Erde wirkende) untergliedert werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht einen Überblick über die Schwankungen im Lauf der Erdgeschichte zu geben und die Abfolge von Kalt- und Warmzeiten in Ansätzen zu erläutern. Weiterhin sollen Ursachen für Temperaturveränderungen auf der Erde vor- und ihre Auswirkungen dargestellt werden.

(.) Es gilt als 'gesicherte Erkenntnis', dass im weltweiten Durchschnitt menschliches Handeln seit 1750 das Klima erwärmt hat (.)'. So steht es in der Kurzzusammenfassung des IPCC-Berichtes vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF 2007, S.1). IPCC, das ist der Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change oder übersetzt der Zwischenstaatliche Ausschuss für Klimaänderungen.Doch ist das wirklich so In anderen Quellen ist ganz anderes zu lesen: 'Es gibt keine Korrelation zwischen Temperatur und CO2 über die Zeit. Das haben die IPCC-Ergebnisse nicht ergeben. Seit 1975 steigt die Temperatur. Die Ursache kann aber auch eine natürliche sein'. So drückt es zumindest Kenneth Hsü (in Schulte 2003, S.131) aus, ohne dass dies hier näher kommentiert werden soll. Jedenfalls hatte der neueste IPCC-Bericht jüngst für großes Aufsehen gesorgt, da er die Klimaerwärmung der letzten Jahrhunderte darstellt, den menschlichen Einfluss dabei thematisiert und Zukunftsszenarien darlegt.Der größte Streitpunkt ergibt sich bei der Frage nach dem menschlichen Einfluss, der kaum wirklich nachweisbar ist, da Zusammenhänge und Folgerungen in der Klimatologie sehr komplex und kompliziert sind. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit gravierender menschlicher Einflüsse gilt als hoch, insbesondere was zukünftige Ereignisse betrifft, von Sicherheit kann man aber nicht sprechen. Es liegen folglich nur Indizien vor, die Beweise fehlen. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit des Einflusses ist das Hauptargument der Befürworter von Gegenmaßnahmen zum Klimawandel, die mangelnde Sicherheit das von den Ablehnern der Maßnahmen.Doch nicht nur reine Überzeugung spielt bei der Diskussion um Klimaschutzmaßnahmen eine Rolle. Im Klimaschutz und in der Klimapolitik mischen eine ganze Reihe Akteure mit unterschiedlichen Motiven und Zielen mit. In dieser Arbeit soll nun thematisiert werden, wie sich der umstrittene wissenschaftliche Hintergrund darstellt, um welche beteiligten Akteure es sich handelt und welche Interessen sie mit ihrer Position mit welchen Mitteln vertreten. Und wer profitiert eigentlich vom Klimawandel Dabei soll in der Arbeit vorrangig auf die Industrienationen eingegangen werden, eine globale Betrachtung müsste sehr differenziert erfolgen und ist vom Umfang her in diesem Rahmen kaum machbar.

Ziel der Veranstaltung war es, ethische beziehungsweise philosophische Fragestellungen in die von den Studenten ausgeübten Wissenschaften zu übertragen und zu bearbeiten. Vorgeschlagen war es, als solche Wissenschaft eines der Studienfächer des jeweiligen Referenten zu wählen. So findet sich das Thema dieser Arbeit im Bereich der Geografie wieder. Migration, Assimilation und Toleranz, das sind drei große und weitläufige, nicht unbedingt nur geographische Begriffe, über die man vom Umfang her sicherlich mehr als eine Seminararbeit schreiben könnte. Im Folgenden sollen diese Begriffe angerissen und für die Themenstellung ausreichend exakt dargestellt, dann möglichst zusammengeführt und auf die Probleme mit Migranten in Deutschland bezogen werden. Dies ist sicherlich nur eines von vielen Beispielen, worauf das Thema bezogen werden kann, soll aber als konkreter Bezug in dieser Arbeit genügen. Aktuell gerade durch die Berichterstattung von deutschen Hauptschulen, werden vielen Probleme erst offensichtlich und dieses, in unserer Gesellschaft eigentlich immer relevante Thema, gewinnt an Brisanz. Die Präsenz in jeder Art der Medien regt einfach zum Beschäftigen mit der Problematik an. Das ursprüngliche Thema Migration, Assimilation, Toleranz kann sicherlich auf jede Gesellschaft der Welt bezogen werden, fast überall spielt oder spielte Migration eine wichtige Rolle in der Entstehung der heutigen Formen der Gesellschaft, genauso wie Assimilation beziehungsweise 'Nicht-Assimilation' und damit eine Beibehaltung, Erweiterung oder Abänderung der gängigen Verhaltens-, Umgangsformen oder Ähnlichem von Immigranten, und Toleranz beziehungsweise 'Nicht-Toleranz' und damit Akzeptanz anderer Sitten und Bräuche oder zum Beispiel Verbot von solchen, die nicht den ursprünglichen entsprechen.[.].

Obwohl sie aus Gebieten dreier Länder besteht, sind enorme Verflechtungen innerhalb der Region vorhanden, sicherlich auch dadurch bedingt, dass die Teilregionen zusammen eine geografische Einheit bilden. Diesen Verflechtungen stehen deutliche Unterschiede in Bezug auf Bevölkerungsdichte, Lebenshaltungskosten, Arbeitsbedingungen und Wirtschaftsstruktur gegenüber. Die Arbeitsbedingungen sind in der Nordwestschweiz am günstigsten, die Lebenshaltungskosten sind dort allerdings sehr hoch. Wohneigentum ist im Elsass mit Abstand am preiswertesten. Die Berufspendler pendeln aus diesen Gründen vor allem vom Elsass in die Nordwest-Schweiz, vom Elsass nach Baden und von Baden in die Nordwest-Schweiz, wobei die rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen oft nicht leicht durchschaubar sind. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit diesen 'Grenzgängern' und ihren Pendlerströmen.
