Als aktiver und grosszügiger Wohltäter stellte er in schweren Zeiten "den Bau von Kirchen ein, um Mittel zur Wohltätigkeit zu haben, [. und selbst] von den vielen Protestanten, welche sich infolge der Widerrufung des Edikts von Nantes [1685] in seinem Sprengel verborgen halten mussten, ward er seiner humanen Gesinnungen willen aufrichtig geliebt. Lorsqu'il fut retiré des affaires, il se livra à la composition de différents ouvrages de morale, qui furent bien reçus du public. L'un de ceux-ci, Le Portrait d'un honnête homme (1693), ''le distingue de tous ses prédécesseurs, par le fondement qu'il assigne à l'honnêteté ; si pour Faret, l'honnêteté se justifie par le service au Roi, et si pour Méré elle ne vise qu'à promouvoir le maximum d'agrément dans les rapports sociaux, pour Goussault elle prend sa source dans la charité chrétienne.''
