    In-16 - vélin ivoire de l'ép. (6) ff., 247 pp. ; 37 (3) pp. A paru la première fois en 1695. Abbé et licencié en Sorbonne, Goussault fut pendant quelques temps conseiller au Parlement. Lorsqu'il fut retiré des affaires, il se livra à la composition de différents ouvrages de morale, qui furent bien reçus du public. L'un de ceux-ci, Le Portrait d'un honnête homme (1693), ''le distingue de tous ses prédécesseurs, par le fondement qu'il assigne à l'honnêteté ; si pour Faret, l'honnêteté se justifie par le service au Roi, et si pour Méré elle ne vise qu'à promouvoir le maximum d'agrément dans les rapports sociaux, pour Goussault elle prend sa source dans la charité chrétienne.'' (V. J.-P. Dens, L'Honnête homme et la critique du goût. Esthétique et société au XVIIe s., pp. 31-35). Goussault dans sa préface aux Conseils d'un père à son fils, nomme comme précurseur Fortin de la Hoguette (Testament, ou conseils fidèles d'un bon père à ses enfants, Paris,1649. Après avoir rappelé l'éloge qui en a été fait, il déclare pour sa part : ''que si je me suis trouvé avoir la même fin que Monsieur de la Hoguette, j'ai certainement pris des moyens bien différents des siens, pour parvenir à cette fin.''
