Hardback. Condition: Very Good. During the 19th century, New York City?s grand mansions on Fifth and Madison Avenues boasted sumptuous interiors, often with each room decorated in a different historic style. Financier, art collector, and philanthropist Henry Gurdon Marquand famously commissioned eminent British painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836?1912) to create the Greco-Pompeian music room for his home. This beautiful publication documents and examines the celebrated design, which included an elaborately decorated Steinway grand piano, a large suite of matching furniture, and an embroidery scheme for the upholstery and coordinated curtains. Alma-Tadema secured Frederic Leighton to create a major painting for the room?s ceiling and Sir Edward Poynter to paint the piano?s fallboard. One of Alma-Tadema?s most famous paintings, A Reading from Homer, was painted for this room. For the first time since Marquand?s death in 1902, the contents of this exceptional room have been brought together and considered in light of Marquand?s patronage, Alma-Tadema?s career, the firm that manufactured the furniture, and the social function of the music room.   Distributed for the Clark Art InstituteExhibition Schedule:Clark Art Institute (06/04/17?09/04/17).…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. NOTE: This is the premarital edition. There is also a married edition by the same title. Christ-centered pre-marital counseling in a book God invented sex and romance. He formed covenant and companionship. He established headship and submission. He created marriage in all of its Christ-depicting, intimacy-building, joy-inducing, pleasure-producing glory. But people don't just stumble upon a wonderful marriage, it takes lots of hard work and know-how. While a book cannot do the work for you, it can prepare your mind and heart for what's coming. If you are engaged, or counseling two people who are, this book will help you build a biblical, Christ-honoring foundation for marriage. Pastor Douglas Goodin has been learning and practicing the contents of this book with his wife Krista since 1992. He loves being married, teaching about marriage, and preparing men and women who are about to marry. This book is the culmination of many hours spent studying, praying, and counseling. You will not find here a sermon on paper. It teaches, but it also gets the prospective bride and groom talking to each other about the crucial matters of marriage. Endorsements: God's Design For Marriage is the perfect book for preparing couples for marriage. It provides excellent content throughout, with stimulating discussion questions. If you are serious about wanting an incredible Christ-centered marriage then this is a must read. -Ben, happily married husband This book helped me discover my expectations and my fianc 's expectations for marriage, then taught us what was realistic and biblical through discussions of God's purposes for marriage and what husbands and wives want/need from their spouse. I could not have been more prepared for marriage and even now, three years later, can't think of anything that this book missed. I am so thankful for this material -Nicole, happily married wife If you are preparing for marriage or are someone who helps people prepare for marriage, I know of no better resource than this book. I have used it numerous times for pre-marital counseling. -Todd, happily married pastor and counselor My wife and I have had the privilege of walking through God's Design for Marriage with engaged couples, and have found that this is not simply a stellar pre-marital counseling handbook, but also a wonderful post-marital resource. -Ben and Rosa, happily married couple and counselors.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) preached a message of reverence for life - all life - that touched the hearts of a generation. As a medical doctor in French Equatorial Africa who selflessly helped those in need, Schweitzer was recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize in the wake of two world wars. But less than fifty years since the time of his death, the great humanitarian and scholar has faded from public awareness. In The New Rationalism, David Goodin explores the underlying philosophy behind Schweitzer's ethic of compassion, presenting it as a response to contemporary questions in social justice, economic equality, and environmental action. For the first time, the political, sociological, and philosophical contexts supporting the development of Schweitzer's ethic are examined in order to bring his timeless message of elemental morality to new life for the modern world. Inspired by Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche, Schweitzer built his ethic to create an elemental nature philosophy compatible with empirical science, and to support a new ontological understanding of the human person - a project he termed the New Rationalism. Goodin recovers and analyzes Schweitzer's arguments and shows where his theories can provide a framework for both environmental and civic ethics today.…
