Lorna Doone is profusely illustrated with eighteen plates. The Innocents Abroad features a number of vignettes. Uniformly bound collection in green and blue pebbled-cloth soft covers. Jane Eyre and Lorna Doone are signed by previous owners to the front free endpapers. Externally, smart with slight bumping and rubbing, leading to minor loss of cloth at spine heads, tails and tips. Internally, front hinges generally weak, particularly to Lorna Doone, Jane Eyre and David Copperfield, leaving the first few pages of the affected volumes a little fragile. Both volumes are 1800 reprints of the 1794 first edition. Both have engraved bookplate of T.C.H. Clare on front pastedowns, and the forst volume another colour bookplate on the FFEP of the Christchurch dramatic Society, Gateshead. Volume 1: v/264pp, light bumping and wear to extremities, a few worn patches on front board, less than an inch long; on rear cover, front edge worn top half, about a half inch deep. Some browning/foxing on first and last few pages, and front hinge is cracked on the inside, but still tightly bound. Volume 2, 239pp, light bumping and wear to extremities, a couple of worn patches on front board at bottom about 2 inches across; some browning/foxing on first and last few pages. A nice set.
