Repräsentatives Gelehrtenporträt eines Hofmathematikers und Alchemisten, vermutlich als Einzelblatt und für fränkische Sammlungen von Gelehrten- und Nürnberger Porträts bestimmt. Goldmayer wird als "Comes Palatinus Caesareus, Mathematicus et Chymicus" mit intellektuellen Insignien dargestellt: auf dem Tisch liegen Globus, Zirkel und weitere mathematisch-alchemische Geräte, die seine Tätigkeit als Hofmathematiker und Chemiker hervorheben. Die ovale Rahmung mit lateinischer Umschrift und die Versinschrift im Unterrand folgen dem im 17. Jahrhundert verbreiteten Typus des gelehrten Porträts, wie er besonders in Nürnberg gepflegt wurde. Pfanns fein schraffierender Stichstil entspricht der Nürnberger Porträttradition um die Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts. Andreas Goldmayer (Goldmair, Goldmeyer) aus Gunzenhausen in Franken war ein im 17. Jahrhundert wirkender Mathematiker, Astrologe und Alchemist, der als kaiserlicher Pfalzgraf (Comes Palatinus Caesareus) ausgezeichnet wurde. Er war in Nürnberg und an verschiedenen fränkischen Höfen tätig und verfasste astrologische Prognostika und Schriften zur Alchemie und Mathematik, von denen nur ein Teil überliefert ist. In zeitgenössischen Verzeichnissen fränkischer Porträtsammlungen wird er als "Mathematicus Noribergensis" und "Chymicus" geführt, sein Todesjahr wird dort mit 1665 angegeben, sein Alter mit etwa 60 Jahren. Goldmayer gehört damit zu jener Gruppe von frühneuzeitlichen Hof- und Stadtgelehrten, die zwischen seriöser Mathematik, Astrologie und Alchemie agierten. Der Stich dokumentiert die Selbstrepräsentation eines frühneuzeitlichen Mathematikers und Alchemisten als höfisch geehrter Gelehrter und Naturkundiger.
