Er beschreibt die ideologischen Hintergründe, die Vorbereitung der Machtübernahme und die Praxis einer staatlichen Terrorherrschaft , die von 1975 bis 1979 u¨ber zwei Millionen Tote forderte und ein zerstörtes Land hinterließ. Goeb belegt in seinem Buch, dass ohne den CIA-gesteuerten Putsch gegen den damaligen Staatschef Sihanouk, die Bombardements der US-Airforce und die Einflussnahme Chinas der Genozid nicht möglich gewesen wäre. Der Kalte Krieg sorgte dafür, dass die UNO eher die Roten Khmer als UN-Vertretung akzeptierten als die neue Regierung Kambodschas. Sie galt als Vasallenregime Vietnams. Ausführlich wird der viele Jahre andauernde Kampf beschrieben, die Verbrechen der Pol-Pot-Zeit vor Gericht zu bringen. Alexander Goeb unternahm von 1979 bis 2012 zahlreiche Reisen nach Kambodscha.
