Item description from seller

Hardcover, sturdy vinyl boards, 143pp + 48 pages of b&w photos, NOT ex-library. No ISBN. Gently aged, clean condition with unmarked text, free of stamps. Good dust jacket with moderate wear. -- This is a travel book by West German journalist Alexander Goeb that documents daily life in the Soviet Union. Goeb travelled through various Soviet republics during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The text highlights the differences between the modern, industrialised cities in the western part of the USSR and the remote, traditional communities in the east. Goeb uses the Siberian white crane, a fixture in local folklore, as a central metaphor for how these eastern communities connected to their landscape. The book is uncommon because the author was an outsider from the West, yet the Soviet government chose to translate and publish his work. Because of this, the text combines a Western reporter's curiosity with the specific, careful tone required by state-approved publishing. The book also relies on numerous pages of documentary photographs, showing the actual clothes, faces and streets of the era just before the Soviet system collapsed.…
