Leather cover is very aged for this 1831 original stated second edition by Stoddart, Atherton (Key and Mielkie Streets, Philadelphia). Much browning of pages and foxing. Stated second edition. Volume 3 only. Bound in full leather with gilt decoration and lettering, cover shows minor wear and rubbing, slight bowing and soiling. Pages are heavily foxed. Engraved plates throughout. Godman was a physician and anatomist and one of the earliest members of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (now of Drexel University). Title page is has a small hole near the publisher's name. Original owner's (Rob Bissette) name in pencil on inside front cover and dated April 5, 1862. BR (Box 303).…

A casual account of Godman's walks through nature, originally published serially in the Philadelphia Quaker journal The Friend. Godman's text is preceded by a memoir (uncredited) of the author by Daniel Drake, under whom Godman practiced at the Medical College of Ohio. Text concludes with a very brief account (also extracted from The Friend) by Dr. Reynell Coates of his 1823 voyage to India as a ship's surgeon, during which he collected many entomological specimens.
