The conference was sponsored jointly by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and Arthur D. Little, Inc., and was held at Cambridge, Massachusetts, July 25, 1961. This conference met to discuss the structural and material requirements of space vehicles that must fly through the earth's atmosphere at high speeds. Although the earth's atmosphere protects it from particulate matter, it has proven to be a serious hinderence to re-entry of space vehicles.
