Ercolano ha gridato al mondo la sua tragedia, nitida negli agghiaccianti particolari come in rapide sequenze filmate. La popolazione di alcune migliaia di abitanti, che aveva sottovalutato i primi brontolii del Vesuvio in quel…caldo 24 agosto del 79 d. C., non era fuggita per la strada costiera in direzione di Napoli, come senza prove è stato a lungo sostenuto. Aveva disceso a precipizio le ripide rampe che dall'alto della città, attraverso le porte, confluivano in una lunga gradinata che portava alla spiaggia, nella speranza di trovare salvezza sul mare. Ma il mare era impazzito. Qualche imbarcazione messa con enorme sforzo in acqua si era capovolta. Non rimaneva che accalcarsi negli angusti ambienti ai due lati della gradinata, ricovero d'inverno per le barche. Non c'era spazio per tutti: folli di terrore, uomini e animali protendevano i corpi in violente spinte per entrare. Altri si ammassavano sul limitare o rotolavano sulla spiaggia nell'opacità di una nube ardente che li tormentava e soffocava. Libro.
