Questa serie a fumetti è stata creata nel 1998 da Giancarlo Berardi, uno dei più famosi autori italiani di fumetto[2][3] (già ideatore di Ken Parker), ed è nata dall'esigenza della Sergio Bonelli Editore di avere nel suo catalogo una serie prettamente poliziesca[4] ? oltre che dalle richieste dei fan di Ken Parker, i quali, dopo la sua chiusura, chiedevano da tempo un nuovo fumetto di Berardi.[1] Il fumettista Giancarlo Berardi, creatore della serie. Inizialmente Berardi aveva proposto a Sergio Bonelli le idee per due serie completamente diverse: Stark, a sfondo fantascientifico, e Draco,[5] del genere spionaggio Bonelli le rifiutò entrambe poiché non rientravano nella sua linea editoriale. L'autore puntò allora sul genere noir e creò un personaggio femminile che ben incarnasse gli stilemi del genere ? su tutti le trame investigative e una certa introspezione psicologica. Il nome e il cognome della protagonista non furono scelti casualmente: Berardi la chiamò Julia traendo spunto dalla gens Iulia, per omaggiare la sua origine italiana, e le diede il cognome Kendall per suggerire indirettamente che il personaggio fosse stato creato «dall'autore di Ken Parker».[6] Per meglio conoscere e preparare le tematiche della serie, Berardi partecipò come auditore per alcuni mesi ai corsi di criminologia dell'Istituto di Medicina Legale di Genova. Inoltre si documentò attraverso la lettura di molti testi di psicologia, sociologia, psichiatria, psicanalisi, medicina legale e balistica, sommati a romanzi e articoli giornalistici di cronaca, nonché alla visione di film e documentari.[7][8] La protagonista Julia Kendall è ispirata fisicamente ai tratti di Audrey Hepburn,[9] una delle attrici preferite dell'autore:[7] l'avere a che fare con una protagonista femminile ? una donna tutto sommato normale, in cui è facile riconoscersi e identificarsi ? ha portato la serie ad avere una buona parte del suo pubblico composta da donne e ragazze,[4] fatto insolito per un fumetto di questo genere. Il primo albo della serie, dal titolo Gli occhi dell'abisso, è uscito in edicola nell'ottobre del 1998. I primi numeri ebbero subito un buon riscontro, pur se caratterizzati da un taglio drammatico che spiazzò il pubblico in particolare lo stesso Sergio Bonelli espresse le sue perplessità a Berardi circa l'albo n. 6, Jerry è sparito, particolarmente angoscioso, sicché nei numeri successivi l'autore decise di approfondire gli elementi umoristici e gli aspetti della vita quotidiana di Julia, che in genere fanno da contrappunto alla storia principale. Tale accorgimento decretò il successo della serie.[senza fonte] Il fumetto, nonostante faccia parte della famiglia della Sergio Bonelli Editore, si articola in 128 pagine anziché nelle classiche 96 "bonelliane" ciò è stato giustificato da Berardi con l'esigenza di avere a disposizione un numero maggiore di pagine per meglio approfondire i personaggi e gestire il ritmo della narrazione.[7] Tradizionalmente stampato in bianco e nero, il 3 gennaio 2007 Julia ha festeggiato il nº 100 con un albo interamente a colori,[10] cosa ripetutasi nel maggio del 2015 per il traguardo del nº 200. La serie a fumetti racconta le vicende di Julia Kendall, una giovane criminologa alle prese con i crimini, i misteri e i lati oscuri della sua città, Garden City un'immaginaria metropoli del New Jersey, attraversata dal fiume Marygold, dove tutte le strade portano il nome di un fiore diverso. L'attrice Audrey Hepburn, modello grafico per i tratti fisici di Julia Kendall. I casi di cui si occupa la portano in varie occasioni a vivere situazioni di estremo pericolo, poiché le sue capacità di psicologa, a cui fa spesso affidamento il Garden City Police Department, la conducono spesso sulle tracce di feroci serial killer (una su tutti la spietata Myrna Harrod, personaggio ricorrente della serie) e criminali privi di scrupoli altri casi la vedono invece coinvolta in intrecci del classico tipo del whodunit (Who done it? ? in italiano: Chi è stato? ? luogo comune narrativo dei gialli in lingua inglese, in cui si analizzano i moventi e le azioni dei vari protagonisti per arrivare a scoprire il colpevole). Ad affiancarla nelle sue indagini ci sono quasi sempre il burbero tenente Alan Webb e il simpatico sergente "Big" Ben Irving, oltre che l'amico e investigatore privato Leo Baxter. Caratteristica della serie è l'ampio ricorso al diario di Julia ? dove la protagonista annota praticamente di tutto ? attraverso cui riusciamo a comprendere la complessa personalità di Julia e la realtà che la circonda, oltre che a seguire l'analisi dei crimini e lo svolgimento delle indagini. Da segnalare il fatto che, occasionalmente, in alcuni albi il racconto della storia non avviene tramite il diario di Julia, ma viene eccezionalmente affidato ad altri personaggi della serie (come Myrna Harrod, o il sergente Irving). TRAMA William Bland, ventotto anni, bianco, impiegato e? morto. Per la precisione, ucciso a colpi di attizzatoio sul cranio. La scena del crimine non presenta misteri, il che non si può dire a proposito della vittima. Chi era William?
