Angolo superiore un poco sgualcito, piccola abrasione superficiale al dorso, peraltro copia i…n ottimo stato, probabilmente mai letta -- Questo libro, al suo apparire, nel 1768, fu dato al rogo nella pubblica piazza di Parigi. Era considerato un pamphlet pericolosamente sovversivo, nei medesimi tempi in cui gli illuministi cominciavano a diffondere ragioni della libertà e delle leggi naturali. L'autore era un philosophe della cerchia dei primi liberisti (gli inventori stessi della formula: laissez-faire, laissez-passer, le monde va par soi-même); intendeva trasfigurare, nella storia del povero Chinki, una volta prospero e felice contadino della Cocincina, l'irresistibile prodursi della miseria dal crogiolo di tassazioni più regolamenti protezionistici più corporativismo agitato da uno stato (francese, ma di ogni altro paese) devoto alla maggior gloria e ricchezza della nazione. E come con la miseria proceda una razza di intermediari avidi e nocivi, e un governo, già custode del benessere dei cittadini, nutrito del languore dei sudditi. Più o meno negli stessi anni dello Chinki di Coyer, in Inghilterra David Hume, il grande empirista, dava veste di romanzo (è Il caso di Margaret, detta Peg, unica sorella legittima di John Bull, pubblicato in questa stessa collana) a una simile analisi, sul danno alla libertà di uno stato invadente e soprattutto spendaccione: ed è notevole scoprire con quanta eleganza di satira questi vecchi illuministi parlassero dei nostri giorni.
