Gilt titles on spine and small gilt decoration on upper board. Although dating from the sixteenth century, this was the first English translation. On the limitation page of Volume I is stated "One thousand copies for England and America, No. 247." Vol 1, xxviii, 276 pp, Vol 2 ix, 323 pp. Each volume has nine plates, including frontispieces. Deckled edges. The cover page design is typical of the period, with a simple yet elegant layout, a decorative initial, and the use of red and black ink for printing, which was a common feature in more prestigious or limited edition books of the time. The decorative initial here includes a figure which seems to be from a tale or a representation of a character related to the stories within the book. The volumes were illustrated by E. R. Hughes, likely Edward Robert Hughes. He was part of the later phase of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of English painters, poets, and critics, founded in 1848.
