Front board has a small, gilt-stamped picture of maiden with a cow and floral background. Limited edition of 600, this being no. 114. 11 tissue-guarded photogravure plates by E.R. Hughes (2 have foxed margins). Pages untrimmed. and tanning slightly with age. 1 page with tear visibly repaired. Spine darkening but gilt titling clear. The head and foot of spine are slightly rubbed. Foxed endpapers. Binding tight For non-UK mailings extra postage might be needed (wt. >1.34kg). One of these stories is said to have given Shakespeare the inspiration for his "Merchant of Venice" , silk moire covered boards.

Il Pecorone è una raccolta di cinquanta novelle scritte da un non meglio identificato ser Giovanni Fiorentino tra il 1378 e 1385. L'opera è conservata in tre manoscritti: il Laurenziano Rediano 161 databile al XVI secolo e conservato presso la Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana di Firenze, il Codice 85 della Biblioteca Trivulziana di Milano, e il Codice magliabechiano II.IV.139 del XV secolo nella Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. Il testo contiene cinquanta novelle suddivise in venticinque giornate introdotte da un proemio e racchiuse in una cornice. Ottimo esemplare. Il prezzo del libro è comprensivo delle spese di confezionamento e spedizione mediante raccomandata tracciabile.

Limited editions of 1000 copies; both sets are No. 933 of 1000. Original gray-green cloth with gilt illustrations and lettering on front board and spine, Venetian deckle edge paper, top edges gilt. Edge wear and rubbing on boards, most notably and head/tail of spines. Spines mildly sunned/faded. Gilt still bright on front panels but faded on spines. Some gutters starting or cracked in various volumes. The Facetious Nights of Straparola was originally published in the 16th century, and The Pecorone in the 14th. Both are said to be influenced in style by Boccaccio's Decameron, and contain collections of stories, fairy tales, legends and fables of Italy. Both sets were highly influential in their day. The Facetious Nights is said to have inspired later collectors of tales such as Perrault and the Brothers Grimm, and The Pecorone is said to have inspired Shakespear's Merry Wives of Windsor. A lovely 18th century set, a beautiful addition to any collector's library.

Il Pecorone (The Simpleton) was written as a collection of short stories in the 14th century in the pattern of Boccaccio. One tale is considered the likely basis for Shakespeare's 'Merchant of Venice'. A superb copy of the first English edition of this very scarce work.
