Mentre in questo periodo furono pubblicati numerosi trattati che descrivevano lo stile di scherma insegnato a Napoli e in Sicilia, l'Arte di Gorio descrive uno stile di scherma che si differenzia per aspetti fondamentali ed è più simile allo stile di scherma visto nei trattati francesi (successivi) che trattano l'uso di quella che viene comunemente chiamata la spada corta.
