He recounts the way he learned about politics and public speaking at his mother's knee. This was only natural, given that she was the first female County Councillor for the North Riding of Yorkshire and an ardent thespian. Boarding school. Tales of the first Water Strike, the Miner's Strike, falling orders at the shipyards and a car industry in decline are all told with an original mixture of sensitivity and fun.
