Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores an unusual case of color blindness in the peripheral retina, as reported by F. Schumann in 1904. The author provides detailed descriptions of the case and its symptoms, including the subject's inability to see green and partial blindness to red. This is contrasted with the subject's ability to differentiate complementary colors and experience after-image and contrast sensations when viewing colors to which they are blind. The author also discusses the broader implications of this case for understanding the functional levels of color vision and the nature of color perception. Through this analysis, the book offers valuable insights into the complexities of human sensory perception and the intricate workings of the visual system. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a meticulous study of the various factors that affect the sensitivity of the retina to color, providing a comprehensive analysis of their influence on the perception of different hues. The author delves into the historical context of color sensitivity research, examining the contributions of previous investigators and highlighting the evolving understanding of this phenomenon. The book further explores the complex relationship between intensity, brightness, and the surrounding visual field, and their impact on the limits of color perception. Through a series of experiments, the author quantifies these factors and establishes effective methods for their control, offering valuable insights into the intricate interplay of visual stimuli and the human visual system. By isolating and examining each factor's influence, this book provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the mechanisms underlying color vision and its variations across different regions of the retina, ultimately contributing to a deeper comprehension of human sensory experiences and visual perception. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 'Reprinted from The Psychological Monographs, Princeton, N.J., March, 1913. A dissertation presented to the faculty of Bryn Mawr College.' Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. It will also be the Only signed copy of any of her books. The signature did not include her name which wasn't unusual back in the day. At the top of the flowery patterned first end paper she wrote 'With the author's Compliments'. As you can see, this book presents quite nicely despite its age. The blue covers are clean. The gilt lettering on the spine remarkably bright. The covers aren't perfect. There are a number of small puffy areas on the front and rear. There's a little bit of wear at both spine ends, and a small spot of rub-through at each corner. The front bottom corner has a tiny crease and there's just a bit of smooth rubbing (not rub-through) on the bottom edges. The top and middle edges look perfect. The top page edge is a little darker than the middle and bottom page edges, but all three seem to have avoided soiling. The book is square (the spine is straight) and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. The covers are very solidly bound as well. If you look closely you can just make out a little bit of the twine bindings along the junctures between the front and rear covers and their end papers. Both junctures are in excellent shape. This is a tight and very solidly bound book. As I mentioned the inside covers and front end papers are a flowery design. They are all in very good shape. There's a hint of toning and a few specks of soiling on the first front end paper just to the side of the author's writing. The blank verso of this page has a small crease at its bottom corner, and off the top edge you can see a little bit of the ink from the author's inscription. The white end papers are very clean and that, happily, accurately describes all of the pages in the book. I saw a total of two speck-sized spots over the entirety of the book. The book contains one page with three photographs. The page is glossy and that material caused some toning at the margins of the page before and after it. The wear on the pages is quite minor. There was a nick to the middle edge that created a tiny thin crease just off the edge of a handful of pages, and something must have pushed against a small area of a number of latter pages because there is a slight indent on them (no more than an inch in size) that does not reach the print. On the rear side of these pages you see this very slight indentation and on the front side of them you see a very light shadow. It's, by my estimation, quite minor, but I don't want to omit mentioning it. Lastly, I found two tiny (1/8th inch) edge tears. There are no markings anywhere in the book. No attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the author's inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. Quoting from Wikipedia: 'Marie Gertrude Rand Ferree was an American research scientist who is known for her extensive body of work about color perception. Her work included "mapping the retina for its perceptional abilities", "developing new instruments and lamps for ophthalmologists", and "detection and measurement of color blindness" With LeGrand H. Hardy and M. Catherine Rittler, she developed the HRR pseudoisochromatic color test. While working at Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, she acquired patents for lighting devices and instruments, and worked on the lighting of the Holland Tunnel between New York and New Jersey. In 1912, she received the Sarah Berliner Research and Lecture fellowship from the Association of Collegiate Alumnae. She was the first female fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society and received a Gold Medal award from that society in 1963. In 1959, she became the first woman to receive the Optical Society of America's Edgar D. Tillyer Medal.'. Inscribed by Author(s).…
