Moderate shelf/edge wear and rubbing to dark green morocco presentation binding, spine lettered in gilt, recipient's name in gilt on the upper cover ("John De Ruyter, Esq.") corners rounded and worn. Marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With engraved map of Long Island pasted on verso of front flyleaf, hand-colored, with vignette of shipping, and neatly inked cruise-track in red and blue. 92 leaves of manuscript text in an attractive and highly legible hand. Moderately rubbed on all edges, joints carefully repaired. A detailed manuscript account by the Norma's "Historian" (Elbridge T. Gerry), who records the adventures he shared with Messrs. Sorchan, De Ruyter, Wood, and Graham as they cruised up and down Long Island Sound. This copy belonged to John De Ruyter, Esq. The "Historian" Eldridge T. Gerry, was a New York lawyer and philanthropist, founder of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and his papers are now held at Columbia. A detailed manuscript account by the Norma's "Historian", who records the adventures he shared with Messrs. Sorchan, De Ruyter, Wood, and Graham as they cruised up and down Long Island Sound. It seems probable that each participant would have received a copy as handsomely presented as this, with the recipient's name gilt on the front cover. Gerry described the Norma, as "a keel schooner yacht of twenty-seven tons and about fifteen years old she can make about nine knots an hour when sailing before the wind she rides the seas like a duck". In the final pages Gerry gives a close description of the yacht, her skipper, a lengthy list of supplies, and a humorous terminal note narrating an attack of a swarm of flies, "centred on the head of the Captain of the Cabin, which was shiny with certain oils and perfumed cosmetiques". The text is interpolated with some verse concerning the cruise, and as befit the times, they ate and drank well, did plenty of socializing, and even had a celebrity sighting: "at three reached New London passing on her way the two American Frigates and the Yacht America used as practice ships by the Naval Cadets". The account is entirely in manuscript, except for the engraved map, and written on rectos only, most likely by a professional scribe. The fact that Gerry was "ranked" as Norma's "Historian", gives a clear indication of the comradely tone of the group. He was a New York lawyer and philanthropist, founder of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and his papers are now held at Columbia. James Lorimer Graham, the "Peace Commissioner" on the Norma, was an extremely well-connected New York publisher, book and art collector, and editor of Putnam's. As one of the early promoters of the Century Association, he was its first librarian and bequeathed his books, including a copy of this log, to the Association. He had undertaken the Grand Tour with his wife in the early 1860s, where he had met Robert Browning, and become a poetic acolyte, renting the apartment in the Casa Guidi in Florence that the Brownings had occupied. They befriended Swinburne, who was to write "Epicede" on Lorimer's death in 1876. The couple returned to New York in 1864 due to the impact of the Civil War on the dollar. In 1866 they went to Florence once again, in 1869, Graham became US Consul. Quarto (242 x 192 mm). With engraved map of Long Island pasted on verso of front flyleaf, hand-coloured, with delicate vignette of shipping, and neatly inked cruise-track in red and blue. 91 leaves of manuscript text in an attractive, lightly-flourished and highly legible hand. Contemporary dark green morocco presentation binding, spine lettered in gilt, narrow flat gilt-chequered bands, compartments with dotted panels, curlicued corner-pieces, and a central floral tool, concentric gilt panels on the boards, recipient's name centrally gilt on the upper cover ("J. Lorimer Graham, Esq.")., inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. A little rubbed at the extremities, joints judiciously repaired, hinges slightly cracked. A very good copy indeed.…
