Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. FIRST EDITION, 1913. Hardcover. This book is rare in its first edition form, and is a comprehensive, scholarly account of one of England's older grammar schools, filling a notable gap in local historical records at the time. It is a foundational text for the Wolverhampton Grammar S…chool's history, and prized for its illustrations and detailed scholarship.ABOUT THIS COPY: Bound in dark blue publisher's cloth with the crest of the Wolverhampton Grammar School crest debossed in gilt on the cover. Spine is lettered in gilt. Illustrated throughout with steel engravings in sepia tones and black and white. Some illustrations are bordered by a plate mark (a depressed / indented border around the image). Frontispiece is a sepia engraving of Wolverhampton School from the South in 1750. Contains a list of illustrations with notes, twelve chapters, seventeen appendices, and a corrigenda et addenda. Indexed. xvi, 411 pp. FROM THE PREFACE: "The annals of the Wolverhampton School have long been neglected. A school, with a history of over four hundred years, has hitherto been dismissed in a few uncertain paragraphs. Speech makers at prize distributions have reiterated the vague and timeworn facts of the school's past in pitiable destitution. The present volume, in being the work of an outsider, is an exception to the rule; but most people have something better to do than to spend their spare time and money in continuous historical research, and at the time when I turned my attention in this direction there seemed very small likelihood of anyone else bringing the matter to a close. I owe apologies to all Old Wulfrunians for taking from them the task which is undoubtedly theirs."CONDITION: Cover shows wear and some soiling. Pages are sometimes uncut at the head and foredge throughout. Light foxing and discoloration, (particularly within the endpapers), yet leaves have evenly toned, are free from marginalia or creasing, and pagination is complete. A previous owners name, E. H. Phillips, is written in pencil on the front flyleaf, dated 1913. A nice find. Full refund if not satisfied.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Quarto hardcover binding of the first volume, comprising all issues published between 1915 and 1932. As a result of Mander's death, only three issues of the second volume were produced. This first series were bound together with an added preface in December 1933; and is ha…nd-signed 'Gerald P. Mander' to the front free endpaper. The original covers are bound into the rear of the volume. 400pp, plus unpaginated index to rear. Eleven tissue-guarded plates, with a further 15 illustrations in text. Measures approx. 10.5" x 8.25" (26.5cm x 21cm). Some marking and discolouration to spine cloth. Small bumps to board corners at lower fore edges, though nothing too offensive. Showing slight partial gauze at front gutter; binding square and firm throughout nonetheless. A little relatively light foxing at closed edges; ditto the endpapers and occasionally thereafter. Nevertheless, contents still clean and bright throughout. Remains a very good original example.
