Hardcover. Condition: Good. 2nd Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, blue cloth boards show scuffing and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear. Spine has some chips that the top and bottom edges. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues other than some pulling here and there. No signatures or bookplates present, no library markings, no handwriting found. Pages are toned due to age and there is some spotting and foxing present. There are some scattered stains and dampstains present, mainly noticeable on some of the illustration pages though staining is also on page 118/119, which has the appearance that a piece of paper was once in here at an angle and darkened the two pages.

Reprint "new edition from new plates with the original illustrations" (as stated upon the title page). x, 297, [1], [2] pages. Hardcover: H 18.75cm x L 12.75cm. Lacks dust jacket. Tan cloth strongly mottled with some soiling, slight fraying at spine ends, some flaking to gilt stamped lettering on front board and spine but still discernable, light wear to board corners, pictorial front board decorated with color illustration of brown fiddle hanging from a nail atop an outstretched gray raccoon hide. Edges toned; light soiling and foxing to endpapers; short swath of surface paper peeled from front pastedown's top right corner; a few scattered spots of soiling and light stains to interior pages which, overall, remain clean. Binding has been re-glued and is firm. A good+ copy per the exterior cosmetics of a classic Georgia book. A circuit lawyer, superior court judge, and representative in the Georgia Assembly, Augustus Baldwin Longstreet was additionally the editor and owner of the States Rights Sentinel newspaper in Augusta, Georgia and a Methodist minister with his literary contributions appearing in The Methodist Quarterly, Southern Literary Messenger, and other newspapers and periodicals. Longstreet served as president of Emory College from 1839-1848, Centenary College of Louisiana from 1848-1849, the University of Mississippi from 1849-1856, and the University of South Carolina from 1857-1861 where after he returned to Oxford, Mississippi residing there until his death in 1870. After being published serially in his newspaper, GEORGIA SCENES was first published in book form in Augusta in 1835 with a second edition published by Harper in 1840. The book marks the advent of the 19th century literary genre known as Southwestern Humor which flourished until the start of the Civil War.
