Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First published by HMSO as a paperback in 1969. This edition has been substantially revised and enlarged and includes an epilogue of the author's account of a return to the battlefields sixty years later.George Coppard describes himself as a 'common private of the uneducated classes. He went to France as a very young volunteer and served as a machine gunner until 1917 when he was badly wounded. This is a vivid account of his experiences on the Western Front and is a social document of considerable importance. He is a sympathetic and sensitive observer and his description of the battlefield after the first day of the Somme has real emotional intensity. What emerges most strikingly is the helplessness of the private soldier in the face of a military system which demanded of him total and unquestioning obedience to the orders of his superiors.Well illustrated with photos and line drawings. 208pp inc letters received by the author. 22cm x 14cm Very Good in Very Good pictorial dustwrapper.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 2nd Edition. 173 pp. The original was only published in 1979, so permission was given for the I.W.M. to run this reprint. The author's life story is briefly told in the dust jacket. This has never been read, but stored in dry and warm conditions, so is in perfect condition. The only reason it is not listed 'as new' is because the first owner embossed their name on the title and contents page, though this is barely noticeable and does not cover any text. (See scans). He joined the Queens Own Royal West Surrey Regiment before transferring the the Machine Gun Corps. he enlisted in 1914 at the age of 16 having told his real age and being told by the recruiting sergeant to "go home and come back tomorrow when you're 19". He served a full four and a half years. All my books are scanned or photographed so you can see what you are buying, also, my pricing includes UK postage, packing and tracking cost. Additional cost for overseas postage.
