Fertility rites, the activities and attitudes of midwives, the devotions and suffeerings of women who were heavy with child, the preparations for delivery, the birth itself, the reception of the new born child: all these performances an rituals, together with the multiplicity of images and symbols associated with childbirth, constituted a common stock of beliefs, values, and customs from which early modern Europeans derived a sense of being at home in an otherwise hostile and alien world. With imaginatiion and narrative flair, gelis explores the origins and development of these beliefs, and show how the behavior of past generations reflects a worldview we have now lost.
