T. Steyn and Emily Hobhouse. "An extremely gifted man, Van der Merwe's intellect and qualities of leadership were exceptional. He made his mark in the political and cultural life of the Afrikaner through an awareness of his vocation. Less a supporter of Hertzog than in line with Steyn's political views, the driving-force of his career was his strict Calvinistic viewpoint and his ideal of a republic. Although his actions were directed by a strong desire for unity, he was not an extremist, and during negotiations was often prepared to compromise, provided an agreement could be reconciled with his principles." - DSAB V, p. 804.
