Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. A very clean copy with an insciption. Feels unread. Masterton and Greytown, further down the Wairarapa valley, were the first planned inland towns in New Zealand. Masterton?s history now stretches back over 150 years. Gareth Winter writes: "Masterton?s progress was slow at first. Queen Street wa…s an unlined pathway, formed by digging ditches in the boggy ground to the side and throwing the refuse onto the roadway to elevate it. Stumps were not removed, but buried under the spoil." Just how Masterton's streets came to be named is a series of fascinating stories, often full of mystery and sometimes hidden in confusion. There is a King Street not named after a king at all. One of the longest streets was once known as Short Street and one street in the middle of town had to be officially opened recently so it could be officially closed! Mayors, members of parliament, prominent settlers, priests and military leaders - all have had streets named after them, and many of the street names carry wonderful stories from the past.

Although there were significant areas of grassland and fern, there were also some large pockets of lowland forest. As Gareth Winter writes: "Masterto…n's progress was slow at first. It was in 1856 that four hundred Merinos began grazing in the wilderness of the Wairarapa's eastern hills, but by the turn nof the century 100,000 more were spread o…ver a giant 31,000 hectares of productive hill-country. In the earliest heady days of its settlement, a single pit-sawn whare with a hand-hewn shingled roof stood at the heart of the station. But following the formation of the Beetham-Williams family partnership, known as The Firm, Brancepeth quickly prospered. An enormous 32-room homestead with a battlemented tower was constructed, as well as a grand stable with a coach house keeping a large collection of horses, buggies and motorcars, a library of 2000 Victorian books, a school, a smithy, store and a cookhouse serving the station and its 300 staff clustered amidst the hill country. The glory days of this vast farm have passed, but at its heart the remarkable homestead and the precinct of buildings still bearing the Brancepath name provide a glimpse into a long-forgotten world. ."--Back cover.
