Hardcover. Condition: Like New. Dust Jacket Condition: Like New. 1st Editon Nov. 2006/ 1st Printing. 298 pp. Clean, fresh copy and dj with very minor shelf wear on front and back flap of dj. Crisp pages and clean text. Sano Ichiro, the samurai detective who has risen to become the shogun's second-in-command, is investigating rum…ors of a plot to overthrow the ruling regime. When the investigation brings Sano's deputy Hirata to Lord Mori's estate, he is shocked to find Lord Mori murdered and grotesquely mutilated in his own bed, and Sano's pregnant wife, Reiko, lying beside him. The only solid clue is a chrysanthemum soaked in blood. Reiko's account of her actions is anything but solid. She insists that she went undercover to Lord Mori's estate in order to investigate claims that he molested and murdered young boys. But when Sano inspects the crime scene, he finds no trace of what Reiko described. And every other witness tells a different story: Lady Mori alleges that Reiko was Lord Mori's scorned mistress and murdered him for revenge. And Lord Mori himself, speaking through a medium, claims his murder was part of Sano's plot to overthrow the shogun! Unless Sano can prove his wife's unlikely claims, both he and Reiko--and their unborn child--face execution for treason. Sano fights desperately to save his family and his honor, as Laura Joh Rowland draws on the tradition of the classic film Rashomon to bring us a masterful tale of intrigue and treachery. -- Product Description. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A well-researched biography of Trần Lệ Xuân (1924-2011), better known as Madame Nhu, the controversial de facto First Lady of South Vietnam during the presidency of her brother-in-law Ngô Đình Diệm. Drawing upon extensive interviews, including rare a…ccess to Madame Nhu herself in exile, Monique Brinson Demery reconstructs the life of one of the most influential and polarizing figures of the Vietnam War era. The work explores the rise and fall of the Ngô family regime, Madame Nhu's political influence, her public image in both Vietnam and the West, and the lasting consequences of the 1963 coup that reshaped Southeast Asian history. Illustrated with contemporary photographs and supported by substantial scholarly apparatus, the volume remains a significant modern study of the Diệm period. Condition: Near Fine book in Very Good+ dust jacket. White boards and red cloth spine are clean and square with sharp corners and tight binding. Interior is bright and unmarked. Dust jacket retains original price and shows only light handling wear. The toned and mottled coloration along the jacket edges is part of the publisher's printed design and not soiling or staining. A few minor creases and light edge wear are present, but no significant tears or losses. Overall an attractive collector and research copy. Stated First Edition with complete first-printing number line ending in '1' on the copyright page. Published by PublicAffairs (Perseus Books Group), New York, in 2013. Hardcover issue with original first-state dust jacket and publisher's price intact. Monique Brinson Demery is an American historian and writer specializing in modern Vietnamese history and U.S.-Vietnam relations. Educated at Harvard University in East Asian regional studies, she conducted extensive interviews with Madame Nhu beginning in 2005, producing one of the first major English-language biographies based substantially on direct access to the subject. Her work has been widely cited by scholars of Vietnam and Cold War history. Jacket design by Pete Garceau (illustrator).

As new condition blue boards with silver spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Michael Lewis; Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quote; Preface and Acknowledgments…. "From the #1 best-selling author of The Big Short and Flash Boys, the story of FTX's spectacular collapse and the enigmatic founder at its center. When Michael Lewis first met him, Sam Bankman-Fried was crypto's Gatsby and, according to Forbes, the richest person in the world under 30. CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaires list. Bankman-Fried's financial goal? Infinity dollars. As he told Lewis on a Berkeley Hills hike, he'd earmarked the cash to solve earth's biggest existential risks, like nuclear war, pandemics, and artificial intelligence turning on mankind. On a more modest level, he toyed with wiping out the national debt of the Bahamas. Lewis hadn't imagined that this unkempt billionaire would be his next subject. Instead, he was meeting Bankman-Fried as a favor to a friend. But by the end of their walk, Lewis was deeply curious about FTX's founder. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side? Lewis decided to find out. "I don't know what's going to happen to you," Lewis said, "but I just want to watch." In Going Infinite, Lewis captures the psychology of a figure who defines an era. For more than a year, Lewis had unparalleled access to Bankman-Fried. He was a fly on the wall during Bankman-Fried's frenetic rise, watching him amass a $22.5 billion fortune in record time. He also witnessed FTX crumble: while employees fled the Bahamas, only Lewis and Bankman-Fried's therapist stayed with the ex-billionaire in his debris-strewn compound. Lewis takes readers on a wild ride through crypto's gold rush, offering an education in high-frequency trading, philanthropy, bankruptcy, and the justice system. Author of #1 bestsellers including Liar's Poker, The Big Short, and Flash Boys, Lewis is the greatest chronicler of our financial world. In Going Infinite, he is at the top of his game, tracing the mind-bending trajectory of a character who never liked the rules and was allowed to live by his own - until it all came undone." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Welch, Chris (book design); Druskin, Julia (production manager); Lops, Joe (prepress production director); Garceau, Pete (jacket design); Liu, Ingsu (art direction) (illustrator).

Illustrated with front and rear endpaper color maps entitled Berlin 1963. "[Kanon] has mastered the art of the historical thriller." - The New York Times Book Review. "Thought-provoking, pulse-pounding." - The Wall Street Journal. "Kanon is the heir apparent to Graham Greene.for he writes of moral quandaries that are real and not created to drive a plot." - The Boston Globe. "Sensational! No one writes period fiction with the same style and suspense - not to mention substance - as Joseph Kanon." - Scott Turow. "Joseph Kanon has a unique and admirable talent: he brilliantly marries suspense and historical fact, wrapping them around a core of pure human drama, while making it seem effortless. This isn't just talent; it's magic." - Olen Steinhauer. "From Joseph Kanon, a "master of the genre" (The Washington Post), an espionage thriller set at the height of the Cold War, when a captured American who has spied for the KGB is returned to East Berlin, needing to know who arranged for his release and what they now want from him. Berlin. 1963. An early-morning spy swap, not at the familiar setting for such exchanges, nor at Checkpoint Charlie, where international visitors cross into the East, but at a more discreet border crossing, usually reserved for East German VIPs. The Communists are trading two American students caught helping people to escape over the wall and an aging MI6 operative. On the other side of the trade: Martin Keller, a physicist who once made headlines but who then disappeared into the English prison system. Keller's mos critical possession: his American passport. Keller's most ardent desire: to see his ex-wife, Sabine, and their young son. The exchange is made with the formality characteristic of these swaps. But Martin has other questions: Who asked for him? Who negotiated the deal? The KGB? He knows that nothing happens by chance. They want him for something. Not physics - his expertise is out of date. Something else, which he cannot learn until he arrives in East Berlin, when suddenly the game is afoot. Intriguing and atmospheric, with action rising to a dangerous climax. Kanon's latest thriller confirms him as the preeminent espionage novelist of our time." - from the inner front jacket flap. Miceli, Jaya (jacket design); Garceau, Pete (jacket design) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. 221, [3] pages. If there are dangerous fools in this book, there are also heroes, unsung, of course. They are the linchpins of the system, those public servants whose knowledge, dedication, and proactivity keep the machinery running. Michael Lewis finds them, and… he asks them what keeps them up at night. Michael Monroe Lewis (born October 15, 1960) is an American author and financial journalist. He has also been a contributing editor to Vanity Fair since 2009, writing mostly on business, finance, and economics. He is known for his nonfiction work, particularly his coverage of financial crises and behavioral finance. Lewis was born in New Orleans and attended Princeton University, from which he graduated with a degree in art history. After attending the London School of Economics, he began a career on Wall Street during the 1980s as a bond salesman at Salomon Brothers. The experience prompted him to write his first book, Liar's Poker (1989). Fourteen years later, Lewis wrote Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game (2003), in which he investigated the success of Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics. His 2006 book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game was his first to be adapted into a film, The Blind Side (2009). In 2010, he released The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine. The film adaptation of Moneyball was released in 2011, followed by The Big Short in 2015. Lewis's books have won two Los Angeles Times Book Prizes and been notable selection features on the New York Times Bestsellers Lists. What are the consequences if the people given control over our government have no idea how it works? "The election happened," remembers Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, then deputy secretary of the Department of Energy. "And then there was radio silence." Across all departments, similar stories were playing out: Trump appointees were few and far between; those that did show up were shockingly uninformed about the functions of their new workplace. Some even threw away the briefing books that had been prepared for them. Michael Lewis's brilliant narrative takes us into the engine rooms of a government under attack by its own leaders. In Agriculture the funding of vital programs like food stamps and school lunches is being slashed. The Commerce Department may not have enough staff to conduct the 2020 Census properly. Over at Energy, where international nuclear risk is managed, it's not clear there will be enough inspectors to track and locate black market uranium before terrorists do. Willful ignorance plays a role in these looming disasters. If your ambition is to maximize short-term gains without regard to the long-term cost, you are better off not knowing those costs. If you want to preserve your personal immunity to the hard problems, it's better never to really understand those problems. There is upside to ignorance, and downside to knowledge. Knowledge makes life messier. It makes it a bit more difficult for a person who wishes to shrink the world to a worldview. Derived from a Kirkus review: Lewis turns timely political reporting he published in Vanity Fair into a book about federal government bureaucracies during the first year of the Donald Trump presidency. At first, the author's curiosity about the relationship between individual citizens and massive federal agencies supported by taxpayer dollars did not lead him to believe the book would become a searing indictment of Trump. However, Lewis allowed the evidence to dictate the narrative, resulting in a book-length indictment of Trump's administration. The leading charge of the indictment is what Lewis terms "willful ignorance." Neither Trump nor his appointees to head government agencies have demonstrated even the slightest curiosity about how those agencies actually function. After Trump's election in November 2016, nobody from his soon-to-be-inaugurated administration visited federal agencies despite thorough preparation within those agencies to assist in a traditionally nonpart. Pete Garceau (Jacket Photographs) and Tabitha Sore (illustrator).

"The bravery of these young Americans in the face of terror has inspired people across the world. I can think of no better way.to express our appreciation than to honor the patriotic service and sacrifice of these great American heroes." - Senator John McCain. "An ISIS terrorist planned to kill more than 500 people. He would have succeeded except for three American friends who refused to give in to fear. On August 21, 2015, Ayoub El-Khazzani boarded train #9364 in Brussels, bound for Paris. There could be no doubt about his mission: he had an AK-47, a pistol, a box cutter, and enough ammunition to obliterate every passenger on board. Slipping into the bathroom in secret, he armed his weapons. Another major ISIS attack was about to begin. Khazzani wasn't expecting Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos, and Spencer Stone. Stone was a martial arts enthusiast and airman first class in the US Air Force, Skarlatos was a member of the Oregon National Guard, and all three were fearless. But their decision - to charge the gunman, then overpower him even as he turned first his gun, then his knife, on Stone - depended on a lifetime of loyalty, support, and faith. Their friendship was forged as they came of age together in California: going to church, playing paintball, teaching each other to swear, and sticking together when they got in trouble at school. Years later, that friendship would give all of them the courage to stand in the path of one of the world's deadliest terrorist organizations. The 15:17 to Paris is an amazing true story of friendship and bravery, of near tragedy averted by three young men who found the heroic unity and strength inside themselves at the moment when they, and 500 other innocent travelers, needed it most." - from the inner front jacket flap. As new condition dark gray boards with red spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Acknowledgments; Damage to the USS Cole; USS Cole: Killed in Action; USS Cole: Wounded in… Action; Introduction: Nightmare; Epilogue; Appendix: Threat Condition Measures; Notes; Index and About the Author. Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates and black-and-white drawing. A 1/2 inch repaired closed tear at the upper rear jacket edge; the dust jacket is otherwise in as new condition (see photographs). "On October 12, 2000, eleven months before the 9/11 attacks, the USS Cole docked in the port of Aden in Yemen for a routine fueling stop. At 1118, on a hot, sunny morning, the 8,400-ton destroyer was rocked by an enormous explosion. The ship's commander, Kirk Lippold, felt the ship violently thrust up and to the right, as everything not bolted down seemed to float in midair. Tiles tumbled from the ceiling, and the ship was plunged into darkness, beginning to sink. In a matter of moments Lippold knew that the Cole had been attacked. What he didn't know was how much the world was changing around him. The bombing of the Cole was Al Qaeda's first direct assault against the United States and expanded their brazen and deadly string of terrorist attacks throughout the Middle East. In this gripping first-person narrative, Lippold reveals the details of this harrowing experience leading his crew of valiant sailors through the attack and its aftermath. Seventeen sailors died in the explosion and thirty-seven were wounded - but thanks to the valor of the crew in the perilous days that followed, the ship was saved. Yet even with al Qaeda's intentions made clear in an unmistakable act of war, the United States government delayed retaliating. Bureaucrats and politicians sought to shift and pin blame as they ignored the danger signaled by the attack, shirking responsibility until the event was ultimately overshadowed by 9/11. Front Burner captures a critical moment in America's battle against al Qaeda, telling a vital story that has, until now - been lost in the fog of the war on terror." - from the inner front jacket flap. "Front Burner is a personal story of loss, and pain - but it is also a story of courage, determination, respect, honor, and integrity that each and every man and woman on the USS Cole demonstrated that day, on September 11, 2001, and indeed, today. This book and the story of the men and women that it recounts is an inspiration." - William J. Perry, nineteenth secretary of defense. "The story of the USS Cole - including why the ship was in Yemen in the first place, the lack of support from Washington that the sailors and the investigators received, how the attack inspired al Qaeda, and the connections to 9/11 - is one that all American need to hear. The professionalism, quiet dignity, and dedication to our country that Commander Lippold and his sailors exhibited is an inspiration to us all, and a reminder of the very best America has to offer." - Ali Soufan, author. "A year before 9/11, a bomb-laden motorboat exploded alongside the USS Cole, killing seventeen Americas in the worst terrorist attack in nearly two decades. It is a story that has remained untold and nearly forgotten for too long. "There is a new form of Jihad to fear - one that threatens the very values on which our freedom rests. Bruce Bawer's While Europe Slept sounded the alarm about the dire impact of Muslim immigration on Europe. Now, in Surrender, he reveals that a combination of fear and political correctness has led politicians, intellectuals, religious leaders, and the media - both in the United States and abroad - to appease radical Islam at the cost of our most cherished values: freedom of speech and freedom of the press. And the cost could ultimately be even higher - the imposition of sharia law in places where liberty once reigned. In Surrender, Bawer writes of a new form of jihad that began with the fatwa against Salman Rushdie in 1989, a death sentence born of Muslim outrage over a work of literature. It marked the dawn of an era of pressure and intimidation designed to crush the ability of non-Muslims to resist Islamic encroachments on Western freedom. In a sweeping survey of recent history and current events, Bawer traces a pattern of heightened sensitivity to Muslim reactions and a reluctance to look honestly at th human-rights deficiencies of the Muslim world. This pattern can be seen in the widespread denunciation of the Danish cartoons and of the editors who printed them; in the glowing media coverage of the supposedly moderate Muslim icon Tariq Ramadan; in the decision of major newspapers to ignore or soft-pedal terrorist "dry runs" on American airplanes; in the international uproar over a single sentence about Islam in a lecture by Pope Benedict; and in attempts by certain parties to silence criticism of Islam by suing writers who have dared to speak forthrightly about the religion. Bawer argues that people throughout the Western world - in reaction to such events as the Danish cartoon riots and the murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh - are surrendering to fear. And he observes that Muslim extremists have found unexpected allies: non-Muslims who, motivated by the misguided doctrine of multiculturalism, refuse to criticize even the most illiberal aspects of Islamic culture. The resulting accomodation undermines the values of individual liberty and equality on which our nation was founded. Fearless and excoriating, Surrender is an essential wake-up call for everyone concerned about the preservation of our most fundamental freedoms." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Includes Authors' Dedications; Introduction; Epilogue; Acknowledgments; and About the Authors. "Rick Ankiel had the talen…t to be one of the best pitchers ever. Then, one day, he lost it." "Rick Ankiel has always been a true phenomenon. He had phenomenal talent, and when he faced hardship, he proved he had phenomenal character too. His book is a candid and powerful story of his pitching success, his cruel and dramatic career derailment, and his historic resurrection as a power-hitting outfielder. Your lasting impression is of Rick the winner and champion husband, father, and person, with a story that impacts us all." - Tony La Russa, Hall of Fame manager. "Many of us took one look at Rick Ankiel's extraordinary athletic gifts and figured that he had it made. But his great talent did not account for the inexplicable demons that he had to endure, from and abusive home to a career-altering mystery. The Phenomenon is bravely candid about his challenges in life and his journey through a game that humbles all of us." - Hall of Famer Joe Torre, four-time World Series Championship manager and MLB's chief baseball officer. "An extraordinary story. Told with honesty, humility, empathy, and an eye for telling detail." - Bob Costas. "A great story of a young man's ability to persist in the face of complicated and difficult issues - I admire him for it and the success he eventually achieved." - Bill Parcells, Hall of Fame NFL coach. "The Phenomenon is a must-read for anyone who has wrestled with his own demons - which is everyone. I couldn't put this book down, maybe because I knew parts of the story, but more likely because it displays the power of the human spirit to overcome the odds." - Mike Matheny, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. "A superb book not just about the glory of baseball, but about how we repair ourselves." - Mark Kriegel, author of Namath, Pistol, and The Good Son. As new condition black boards with gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Mohamed A. El-Erian; Author Dedication; Preamble; Acknowledgment; Notes; Index and About th…e Author. Illustrated with graphs. "Our current economic path is coming to an end. The signposts are all around us: sluggish growth, rising inequality, stubbornly high pockets of unemployment, and jittery financial markets, to name a few. Soon we will reach a fork in the road: One path leads to renewed growth, prosperity, and financial stability, the other to recession and market disorder. Nos Dr. Mohamed A. El-Erian, one of the world's most influential economic thinkers and the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of When Markets Collide, has written a roadmap to what lies ahead and the decisions we must make now to stave off the next global economic and financial crisis. In The Only Game in Town, El-Erian casts his gaze toward the future of the global economy and markets, outlining the choices we face both individually and collectively in an era of economic uncertainty and financial insecurity. Beginning with their response to the 2008 global crisis, El-Erian explains how and why our central banks became the critical policy actors - and, most important, why they cannot continue in this role alone. They saved the financial system from collapse in 2008 and a multiyear economic depression, but lack the tools to enable a return to high inclusive growth and durable financial stability. The time has come for a policy handoff, from a prolonged period of monetary policy experimentation to a strategy that better targets what ails economies and distorts the financial sector - before we stumble into another crisis. The future, critically, is not predestined. It is up to us to decide where we will go from here as households, investors, companies, and governments. Using a mix of insights from economics, finance, and behavioral science, this book gives us the tools we need to properly understand this turning point, prepare for it, and come out of it stronger. A comprehensive, controversial look at the realities of our global economy and markets, The Only Game in Town is required reading for investors, policymakers, and anyone interested in the future." - from the inner front jacket flap. "Mohamed El-Erian has had an extraordinary career as an investment analyst, investor, and market commentator. His 'new normal' concept was prescient, provocative, and has proven out. Agree or disagree, his go-forward thoughts contained in this bracing book are well worth considering." - Lawrence H. Summers, former secretary of the U.S. Treasury. "Widely regarded as onoe of the most astute observers of global economic trends, Mohamed El-Erian is famous for having coined the now-ubiquitous phrase 'the new normal.' Five years ago he was worried that the global economy might take years to regain its footing. Now El-Erian worries it could fall off a cliff. The Only Game in Town is simply a must-read for anyone trying to understand how the global economy might unfold in the next five years." - Kenneth Rogoff, Thomas D. Cabot Professor of Public Policy, Harvard University, and former chief economist and director of research at the International Monetary Fund. Garceau, Pete (jacket design) (illustrator).

"Zig and Nola are back - in the hugely entertaining, highly anticipated follow-up to Brad Meltzer's #1 New York Times Bestselling thriller The Escape Artist. What's the one secret no one knows about you? Archie Mint has a secret. He's led a charmed life - he's got a beautiful wife, two impressive kids, and a successful military career. But when he's killed while trying to stop a robbery in his own home, his family is shattered - and then shocked when the other shoe drops. Mint's been hiding criminal secrets none of them could have imagined. While working on Mint's body before his funeral, mortician "Zig" Zigarowski discovers something he was never meant to see. That telling detail leads him to Mint's former top secret military unit and his connection to artist Nola Brown. Two years ago, Nola saved Zig's life - so he knows better than most that she's as volatile and dangerous as a bolt of lightning. Following Nola's trail, he uncovers one of the U.S. government's most intensely guarded secrets - an undisclosed military facility that dates back to the Cold War and holds the key to something far more sinister: a hidden group willing to compromise the very safety and security of America itself. Trouble always finds her.she's the lightning rod." - from the inner front jacket flap. "The Lightning Rod is my favorite Brad Meltzer novel - so far - and that's high, high praise. The book is a one-of-a-kind thrill ride with half a dozen memorable characters. My personal favorite is Zig, but Waggs, Roddy, and Nola aren't far behind." - James Patterson. "Enigmatic and mysterious, Nola is a force. Great plotting. Great characters. The Lightning Rod is Meltzer at his finest." - Karin Slaughter. "No other A+ author whips up better dialogue than Meltzer. But it's his characters who most excite and engage. Nola and Zig will pull you into a story as entertaining as any by David Baldacci. And Nola is the most accomplished kicker of ass since Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." - A.J. Finn. "Nola Brown is one of recent fiction's all-time great characters, and Meltzer's subtle pacing and narrative charm mean we can't take our eyes off her for a single moment - trust me, this is a terrific, compelling, unputdownable thriller." - Lee Child. "There are few authors who do dialogue that is as sharp and witty as Brad Meltzer does in The Lightning Rod.The characters, plot, pace, and premise work together like a well-rehearsed orchestra. Meltzer is a master storyteller and a superb wordsmith." - Nelson DeMille. Garceau, Pete (jacket design); Richmond, Shelley (jacket photographs); Newman, Donna (author photograph) (illustrator). "In his #1 New York Times bestseller Plum Island, Nelson DeMille introduced readers to NYPD Homicide Detective John Corey, who we first met convalescing on his uncle's waterfront porch from wounds incurred in the line of duty. Six novels later, The Maze finds Cory on the same porch, having survived new law enforcement roles and romantic relationships - wiser and more sarcastic than ever. Corey is restless and looking for action, so when his former lover Detective Beth Penrose, appears with a job offer, Corey has to once again make some decisions about his career - and about reuniting with Beth. Inspired by and based on th actual and still-unsolved Gilgo Beach murdrs, The Maze takes the reader on a dangerous hunt for an apparent serial killer who has murdered nine - and maybe more - sex workers and hidden their bodies in the thick undergrowth on a lonely stretch of beach. As Corey digs deeper into this case, he comes to suspect that the failure of the local police to solve this sensational mystery may not be a result of their incompetence - it may be something else. Something more sinister. The Maze features John Corey's politically incorrect humor, matched by his brilliant and unorthodox investigative skills, along with the shocking plot twists that are the trademark of bestselling author Nelson DeMille." - from the inner front jacket flap. Signed, with a… general sentiment ("Best Wishes") by the author, Dennis Ross, with thick black Sharpie/marker on a Temple Beth Zion Beth Israel Bookplate which is neatly affixed to the center of the blank first free front endpaper. "For almost forty years, Dennis Ross has been an inside player and close observer of U.S.-Israel relations. In this smart and provocative book, he provides an insightful look at the policies toward Israel pursued from the Truman administration to the present and how they have affected America's relationships in the Middle East. It's not only great history but a guide for the future." - Walter Isaacson, President and CEO of the Aspen Institute. "How about an insider's views? How about writing from a constructive point of view? How about learning something about Israel, the United States, and the Middle East? That's all here, thanks to Dennis Ross." - George P. Shultz, 60th U.S. Secretary of State. "Doomed to Succeed is a thoughtful book worthy of a man we called our 'peace process junkie' when he served as head of the U.S. State Department's Policy Planning Staff while I was Secretary of State. Dennis Ross is a fine diplomat who intimately and accurately understands the Arab-Israeli conflict. His new book is a must-read for anyone interested in the U.S.-Israel relationship." - James A. Baker III, 61st U.S. Secretary of State. "When it comes to Israel, U.S. policy has, for some time, empahsized the unbreakable bond between the two countries and our ironclad commitment to Israel's security. Today our ties to Israel are close - so close that when there are differences, they tend to make the news. But it was not always this way. Dennis Ross has been a direct participant in shaping U.S. policy toward the Middle East, and Israel specifically, for nearly thirty years. He served in senior roles, including as Bill Clinton's envoy for Arab-Israeli peace, and was an active player in the debates over how Israel fit into the region and what should guide our policies. In Doomed to Succeed, he takes us through every administration from Truman's to Obama's, throwing into dramatic relief each president's attitudes toward Israel and the region, the often tumultuous debates between key advisers, and the events that drove the policies and at times led to a shift in approach. Ross points out how distancing the United States from Israel in the Eisenhower, Nixon, first Bush, and Obama administrations never yielded any benefits and explains why that lesson has never been learned. Doomed to Succeed offers compelling advice about how the prioirities of Arab leaders can be understood and how future administrations might best shape U.S. policy in that light." - from the inner front jacket flap. "This remarkable book is a definitive treatment of the U.S.-Israel relationship. A gifted analyst and veteran diplomat, Dennis Ross demonstrates that to maintain this 'strategic partnership,' both sides must commit to 'no surprises,' intensive high-level consultations, and 'no unilateral actions' that threaten each other's fundamental interests. A must-read book for future policy makers." - Stephen Hadley, former National Security Advisor to President George W. Bush. Garceau, Pete (jacket design); Kagan, Abby (book design) (illustrator). Some slight edge wear to top of jacket and spine, corners very slightly rubbed, faint fingerprint mark to page fore edges, not price clippe…d ($27.99), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy, looks unread. 372pp. The internet in Russia is either the most efficient totalitarian tool or the device by which totalitarianism will be overthrown. Perhaps both. On the eighth floor of an ordinary looking building in an otherwise residential district of southwest Moscow, in a room occupied by the Federal Security Service (FSB), is a box the size of a VHS player marked SORM. The Russian government's front line in the battle for the future of the Internet SORM is the world's most intrusive listening device, monitoring emails, internet usage, Skype, and all social networks. But for every hacker subcontracted by the FSB to interfere with Russia's antagonists abroad, such as those who, in a massive denial of service attack, overwhelmed the entire internet in neighbouring Estonia, there is a radical or an opportunist who is using the web to chip away at the power of the state at home. Drawing from scores of interviews personally conducted with numerous prominent officials in the Ministry of Communications and web savvy activists challenging the state, Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan peel back the history of advanced surveillance systems in Russia. From research laboratories in Soviet era labour camps, to the legalization of government monitoring of all telephone and internet communications in the 1990s, to the present day, their incisive and alarming investigation into the Kremlin's massive online surveillance state exposes just how easily a free global exchange can be coerced into becoming a tool of repression and geopolitical warfare. Dissidents, oligarchs, and some of the world's most dangerous hackers collide in the uniquely Russian virtual world of 'The Red Web'. Very scarce signed. Jacket by Pete Garceau (illustrator).
