Cloth. Condition: Good. Brown cloth, with original red wrappers bound in. 125 pp. A few black and white photos throughout. An account of the deadly prison fire in the Ohio Penitentiary in Cleveland, Ohio in April, 1930. It was one of the biggest fires at the time. 300 incarcerated people died, with over 200 injured. The incident raised public awareness to the inhumane living conditions that led to such loss of life. Chester Himes, the noted author of mysteries and other work, was incarcerated there at the time, and wrote a story and his first novel based on his experience during the fire. GOOD condition. Minor edgewear to the cloth binding. Original wrappers with heavy uneven toning and minor soiling. Small half moon area of loss to the lower fore edge of the front wrapper and first few pages, perhaps from rodent nibbling. Small piece missing from the upper corner. Heavy toning to the text block, with the cheap paper rather brittle.
