Paperback. Condition: New. Art collectors and their collections make up an important part of the contemporary arts and crafts infrastructure. Not only do museums and art collectors improve an artist's financial situation by buying their work, but their collections also have symbolic meaning. To be included in the right collection can give an artist a high level of recognition; at the same time, the purchase secures their work a place in a system whose aim is to preserve art for the future. Collecting is a selection process which has economic, social, political and art historical implications, and consequences for the artist, the art scene and the public. In On Collecting the authors look at collecting from public, private and personal perspectives to shed light on some of the structures that are responsible for how artworks become 'collectable' and thus available to the public in museums and public spaces. On Collecting is the fourth volume in the series Documents on Contemporary Crafts. The series is published by Norwegian Crafts and offers critical reflection on contemporary crafts, seeking to stimulate discourse within the field. With essays by: Glenn Adamson, Liesbeth den Besten, Paul Derrez, Eivind Furnesvik, Margaret Wasz, Trude Schjelderup Iversen, Gunnar Kvaran, Knut Ljøgodt, Nanna Melland, Yuka Oyama, Anthony Shaw and Petter Snare.…

Paperback. Condition: New. There are many ways to perceive and interpret contemporary craft objects - for instance, as works of representational art in materials like ceramics, glass, textile, metal or wood, or as functional, handmade everyday objects. In this publication, the editors have invited different voices in craft theory to investigate the perception of contemporary craft as a particular discourse and aesthetic vocabulary. According to the editors, contemporary crafts can benefit from being discussed as representations of reality that do not rely on the concept of autonomy. As such, neither do they rely on the conventional dualism between aesthetic objects and everyday things. The authors investigate the possibility to perceive craft objects from perspectives that relate to the aesthetic tradition of materialism.…

Hardback. Condition: New. In his work, Reinhold Ziegler (born in 1965) explores the meaning of jewellery. Through the reduction of visual forms of expression, his works go beyond the purely decorative. His jewellery is not intended to reflect the individual personality of the wearer, but to link the individual with the universal. Gravity was the theme of an earlier series of works, the universal and all-embracing natural force that exists independently of the will of an individual. His current works are inspired by meteorites; originating in deep space, beyond the realm of human experience, they hold a fascination, capture the imagination and lend themselves to reflections about nearness and distance. Ziegler uses these heavenly bodies to express ideas about jewellery worn on the body, as a means to reflect light and distance. In Cosmic Debris, Halvor Nordby analyses the meaning behind Ziegler's meteorite works, focusing on creative influences and interpretation. In an interesting dialogue with the artist, André Gali touches on the artistic journey towards finding meaning and expression and the forces that inspire these.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The profession of exhibition making and curatorial practices has over the course of the last twenty years undergone a seminal change, something which in turn has challenged the notion of what an exhibition can be, not least in terms of communication and design. Large scale group exhibitions, like documenta in Kassel, seem to have involved discussions on exhibition making and curatorial models at the heart of their organisational body. Another common aspect of these large-scale events is that they employ new venues for showing and presenting works, be it museums that normally don't show contemporary art or craft, abandoned factories or various public spaces. Craft 2014, the annual group exhib.…

Hardback. Condition: New. Scandinavian studio jewellery is simply unimaginable without Tone Vigeland (b.1938) and her work. Her distinctive objects flatter the human body and captivate through their dimensions and volume, yet they are assembled from the tiniest hand-crafted components. Tubes of silver wire, precisely cut plates, spheres and eyelets, all in small scale, are invisibly interconnected, and Vigeland's use of heavily oxidised, almost iron-black silver and steel is a typical feature. The result: art on the human body - highly aesthetic, perfectly executed and always wearable. Around 150 jewellery objects from 1958 to 2010 document Tone Vigeland's pioneering creativity. They are complemented with a selection of objects and sculptures from 1998 to the present day, which can now be seen in an exhibition and publication for the very first time. Text in English and German. Exhibition: Die Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum, Munich (DE), 11.3.-11.6.2017.…
