290 pp. Octavo. Original charcoal grey cloth. Gilded lettering on the spine. Former owner's bookplates in the free end papers. Some staining and foxing throughout the volume. Usual handling wear. A good, tight copy. Illustrated with 17 illustrations and maps, including a portrait of Bligh on the frontis, and four fold out charts…. The author of this volume was the historian Ida Lee, born at New South Wales in 1865. In this volume, she researched Captain William Bligh's 1791-1793 voyage to the south Pacific. Bligh and his crew successfully procured breadfruit with the intention of popularizing it in the West Indies. The exploration illustrates how botany and agriculture had significant implications for the expanding of empires that stretched around the globe, and makes for interesting and informative reading. As an note on the provenance of this volume, a bookplate in the free end paper identifies this volume as being from the library of Andrew David, Lieutenant Commander of the Royal Navy.

London, Longmans, Green and Co., 1920. Vortitel, Titel, S. (V)-XVIII, 1 Bl. (Officers of the "Providence"), 290 S., 1 Bl. (Druckvermerk). Ida Lee, Herausgeberin des Werks schreibt in ihrer Einleitung (Auszug): The second voyage of Captain Bligh to the South Sea, so far as I know, has never been published. A short description of the passage of his ships, the "Providence" and the "Assistant," through Torres Strait, was included in his work Terra Australis, by Matthew Flinders, who served as a midshipman in the "Providence". These particulars, however, were taken from Flinders' own log. Written in 1791-93 Bligh's log-books, after being for some time at the Admiralty, were lent to the Great Exhibition of 1851. They were not afterwards returned to Whitehall, but remained at South Kensington undisturbed and unsought for, until Mr. Perrin, the present Admiralty Librarian, to whom my cordial thanks are due for permission to transcribe them, recovered the forgotten volumes and replaced them in the Admiralty Library. Interest in this second voyage of Bligh may possibly have been over-shadowed by the popularity of the story of his first voyage, which included the "Mutiny of the Bounty'". Dampier, Anson, and Cook on returning to England had given glowing accounts of the virtues of the breadfruit, and in 1787, when King George III. complied with a request from the merchants of the West Indies to introduce the tree into those islands, Bligh was placed in command of the ship chosen to carry out this object..
